Hate to admit it but I need this service.  I just contacted my airline (ANA) and they have confirmed I am booked for it.  Thing is I can walk short distances (like up to 1000 yards before the pain is overpowering) and have never used it before.  I have no clue how to get to the counter or where the wheelchair will be,,

 

I was told to go to Counter L on Level 4. 

 

Anyone with experience doing this I'd appreciate your guidance.

 

 

That's the ANA  row for checkin. A wheelchair will be brought for you there and you will be wheeled to immigration and from there either to a holding place where you will sit until collected and deposited at the gate, or taken directly to the gate. (That's what I see  when I checkin for my ANA flights in the afternoon to NRT.)

 

From what I have seen the wheelchair people are  very nice and helpful.  If you are transiting at NRT, or elsewhere, a chair will be there at the gate. Please remind them at checkin. This will probably already be noted on your reservation, but sometimes people forget.

Thanks.  Then I am good to go.  I can make it from curb to check in no worries.

 

Most airports have basically the same procedures. An added bonus at Rome Fiumicino is you call for a wheelchair at the meeting point outside the terminal and they deliver you to the  aircraft door. At Swampy they drop you off at the Taxi rank.

Not sure about ANA, but JAL has "Red Seats" reserved for handicapped passengers in front of the check-in counter where an agent will assist you with check-in.  Then a wheelchair attendant will take care of you and push you all the way through immigration and security to your gate.  Upon arrival a wheelchair will be ready for you when you deplane.  While tipping is taboo in Japan, elsewhere I always give a generous tip in the local currency.  Fortunately, I have a traveling companion accompanying to assist if needed.

I'm OK getting to the check in counter.  And standing for a little bit if I have to.  I feel guilty needing this.  Problem is in my left hip but I think the cause is in the back.  Pisses me off because I had a hip replacement in the left hip Sept 2023.  Might not have needed that and the issue might need a different resolution.

 

Aging sucks.  Guess it is better than being dead.  Weird part about all this is I can't walk distance.  Or stand around long.  But I can still play golf.  Totally weird.
