Left Behind

Slang, rapture theology

Jesus will return to “take” his people to heaven while those who do not believe in him will be “left behind” on earth to suffer God's judgment

Last night in online meeting...

Coworker: Don't tell everyone but I am retiring in a couple weeks

Other Coworker: Are you going to retire to Costa Rica or Panama?

Another Coworker: Columbia is real nice, too.

Coworker:  My wife is Mexican.  We're moving to Mexico.

So, anyone with any sense is getting out of America and moving where it's more affordable.

So, looks like it's just going to be poor people who can't afford to move, MAGAs and immigrants.

The "Left Behinds"...

Enjoy!

You're about to enter the "Find Out" phase. 😂

Are you saying after four years of Joe Biden the USA is unaffordable?

Overall +20% inflation rate during Biden and average annual inflation rate of only 5.3% was probably very difficult for those at the bottom of the economic ladder to handle.

Correct, Mike? 😀

In case you didn't notice the RRE bubble began under George W Bush.

Yeah, the COVID-19 shutdown also allowed the "elite" upper working class office workers to work remotely

Instead of living in expensive big cities that had nothing open except gas stations grocery stores and dispensaries.

They took off for Bubbaland and bought up everything there and the local yokels got greedy and raised prices even in Gooberville.

And the locals got jealous of the wealthier newcomers. 😄

In other words, get out if you can.  That's what I thought, almost three years ago, and so here I am, in Thailand.  I'm afraid I might not even be safe here, so long as there's a threat of nuclear or financial armageddon.

A nuclear war would end life on earth. A financial meltdown could result in most people losing everything, even those who thought hey had their bases covered.  Either way, I sense danger.

I am not so sure Mexico or Costa Rica are really that cheap these days. If so man my people are really going they won't stay affordable for long. I actually moved back to the USA a few years back and just don't see the value in these sub-par locations like Colombia or Panama. I guess if you can't afford to live in America then beggars can't be choosers. Sort of sad when you have no choice but to be an economic refugee.

The problem with that is if you don't like it and are that close to the edge financially you aren't going to be able to move back should you change your mind. Luckily i moved back when houses were still cheap and they have doubled or more since Covid. I dopn't think many of the Thai expats could move home now if they wanted to.

Prices in places like Bangkok or Hua Hin are often comparable with those in Europe. Mainly in the shopping malls and for house upgrade or repair services. In fact the worst cheating is in Hua Hin with crooked contractors charging prices close to those in the west, using lower grade materials, unqualified workers, jobs not finished or properly supervised.

Hint : if you have construction upgrade to do in your house, check everything, starting with the cement they use as they tend to use the cheaper brands that are crap and not properly mixed. Next never pay anything more then 20% at start, a bit more in the middle and the balance only when the job is done. If you can, have a contract made in Thai with a local lawyer. It may cost a bit, but will avoid far more cheating from a majority of the building contractors in Hua Hin and probably elsewhere. And last of all, never mandate for work to be done when you are not around and watch them closely that they do not steal the surplus of material you have provided.

And don't get fooled with the old lie of over quoting the cost of the materials. They will add 4000 to 5000 THB more, in comparison to what is the real cost even in places like Home Pro where the materials will be much cheaper.

I rented a studio apartment in a modern 8 story condo in HH for 10KBaht/month, month -to-month which you could probably rent for half that if you signed a year lease.

Where can you rent a studio apartment in Europe for 137€ monthly?

Is it 10m walk to the beach?

5 minutes from great under 2€ Fried rice?

Europe hasn't been that cheap since the 70s. 😀

Yeah, I suppose if you live in an expensive pool villa they're going to rip you off.

They don't do that in Europe, too?

Hard to believe European building contractors don't have a markup on materials.

Costs time and money to go to building supply store, transport the materials, load, unload, etc.

Time is money, honey. 😄
