Lots of reasons such as avoiding ATM fees, setting yourself up for a future longer stay visa, real estate purchase, extended stay on tourist visas extensions, etc. But it's gone way DEEPER than that. People on five year DTV visas can't open bank accounts either. To add to that, the ATM withdrawal fees in Thailand have recently gone up a lot. Yes some people can dodge that with ATM pay back plans abroad, but not most people.
