A man believed to be under the influence of drugs caused panic in Hat Yai after standing and lying on railway tracks, forcing an oncoming train to stop. Security guards and local residents struggled to detain him. The alarming event was captured in a viral video posted by Sittichok Phadphong, a railway technician from Hat Yai Locomotive Depot. The footage shows a man in a red shirt and knee-length shorts standing in the middle of the tracks, lying down, and even approaching a moving train as it prepared to enter Hat Yai Railway Station. Speaking to reporters, Mr. Sittichok described how the incident unfolded at 13:30 on 20 March, as he was working on Train 452 (Sungai Kolok – Hat Yai). “I noticed the man approaching from the right side of the tracks and slowed down the train. Suddenly, he stepped in front of the locomotive, so I alerted the driver to reduce speed. Moments later, he lay down on the rails, directly in the path of another oncoming train. At that point, we had to stop everything and call the station’s security team.” Hat Yai railway security guards arrived to remove the man from the tracks, but he fled on foot, sprinting 500 metres before a group of residents and security personnel caught up with him. During the struggle, the man fell and broke his left arm. He was then handed over to emergency responders from Mittraphap Samakkhi Foundation (Tong Sia Siang Tung) and taken to Hat Yai Hospital. Local residents recognised the man, stating he lives in Thung Sao and frequently abuses drugs to the point of experiencing hallucinations. Witnesses claimed he had been talking to himself and behaving erratically before running onto the tracks. Shockingly, reports indicate that he had only been discharged from a psychiatric hospital a few days earlier, on 18 March, raising concerns about his ongoing drug use and mental state. Authorities are expected to conduct further investigations to determine whether he requires rehabilitation or legal action. -- 2025-03-22 ScreenRecording_03-22-2025 05-26-47_1.mp4
