A rule change which isn't confined to tourists, I think. According to the video you'll now need a Thai ID card (ie be a Thai citizen) in order to purchase the 199 THB SIM card from 7-11.

Anyone with brains just buys a ESIM data package online for as little as 4-5 dollars, no passport required at all. Most better deals will even cover entire SE asia + Australia at once. Speed also way better than tourist sims.

That's how pathetic this entire measurement is to track tourists and sim cards.

Many phones still don't accept e=SIMs - you still need you buy local packages.

I went into an AIS service centre a couple of weeks ago to grab a 50 baht SIM. No have. Went to another who told me that they only sell SIM if you buy a 300+ baht package with it.

I grabbed a couple of 50 baht SIM online and went back to the same service centre to register them.

The new scam I guess. Much like at the airports, to try to get you to spend at least 300 baht, even if you just need a SIM with no add ons.
