Labour faces fury as new analysis reveals 13,000 luxury cars were handed to PIP claimants while the nation's benefit bill surges to record levels.

Britain's benefits bonanza has worsened since Labour swept to power, with a car scheme handing 13,000 premium motors to claimants last year.

New analysis exposes the sheer scale of the handouts, with 3.23 million people now claiming Personal Independence Payments (PIP) even as taxes sit at their highest level since WW2.

The high-end cars dolled out to claimants include Mercedes, BMWs and Audis, and four in every five PIP claimants also trouser a mobility handout worth between £30.30 and £80 a week.

Further analysis found 52,210 people were claiming PIP in April 2026 with back pain listed as their main disabling condition, the equivalent of the entire population of Torquay.

Luxury cars are not "handed out" for free, and these premium brands have recently been removed from the scheme entirely.

The headline stems from an analysis by the TaxPayers' Alliance. It revealed that in 2025, premium brands like Mercedes, BMW, and Audi accounted for 5.7% of new registrations under the Motability Scheme, which equates to roughly 13,000 cars.

The critical context behind these numbers includes:

• Leased, Not Free: Under the Motability Scheme, claimants do not get free cars. They choose to exchange all or part of their government-funded mobility allowance (usually the Enhanced Mobility component of PIP) to lease a vehicle.

• Claimant Out-of-Pocket Costs: While entry-level cars are covered entirely by the allowance, premium or higher-spec vehicles typically require claimants to pay a substantial, non-refundable upfront cash payment (called an "Advance Payment") out of their own pocket.

• Luxury Brands Have Been Axed: In response to growing criticism regarding the types of vehicles available, ministers and scheme coordinators have since removed premium brands like BMW and Mercedes from the eligible fleet selection.

• Most Popular Choices: The overwhelming majority of participants choose standard, mainstream vehicles. The top brands requested on the scheme are Peugeot (12.3%), Nissan (9.1%), and Vauxhall (8.2%)
