there is an organisation (actually a charity i think) called ECPAT ,end child prostitution and trafficking (i think ) and i think they are based here in bangkok . sorry for being vague ,but i read something about it a few years ago , and so im not 100 percent sure my facts are straight . i do remember this organisation saying to get in touch if you had evidence or suspicions about these people and they would check things out . might be a good idea to contact these people first . either that or just STAB THE C**T :o

ECPAC is a network of organisations and individuals working together to eliminate the commercial sexual exploitation of children.

It seeks to encourage the world community to ensure that children everywhere enjoy their fundamental rights free from all forms of commercial sexual exploitation.

The ECPAT acronym stands for ' End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography and Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purposes'.

I am so relieved to see that men here think like this.

All decent men think like this Kat ... no matter how tough and hardcore we are, a child's suffering melts our hearts.

Thank goodness all of you have not lost a sense of what is right.
Funny you should say that. It's my belief that men and women who physically and/or sexually abuse children have lost the ability to distinguish between right and wrong and have become 100% evil, and in doing so have lost their right to live.

Rod, you rock! I agree totally with what you just said. I also want to second the sentiment about being extremely careful about accusing people here or anywhere of this crime, because it is socially disfiguring. Wouldn't want an innocent to get skewered over a fantasy on whatever they didn't act upon. But if they are in fact a pedophile, then they deserve what they get.

I'm glad TIZME found the logo for ECPAT; I was going to do it yesterday but then got distracted by something. Trouble is, they sometimes have a problem calling people back. But it could be that they don't have time for people who are trying to volunteer for them, rather than actual guilty pervs.

Getting back to Rod's apt comment about abusers, I've been trying to estimate how bad or rife sexual abuse is in Thailand. In the west there is plenty of research on sexual abuse, and it is taken as almost a given that many women that are sexually abused end up in the sex industry. Of course, here there are different cultural dynamics, but does anyone have an idea or glimpse of how these dynamics may play into the lives of the women here? I have been trying to figure this out for a long time, but there are very little statistics on this subject. Only the mugs of foreign pervs are ever published and reported. I'm trying to find out how many of these women grow up as girls. Can anyone out there shed some light? I know about most of the other stories about them having to care for the families, and girls going to work in the bars for their parents, etc.

But does anyone know how many of the women in Thailand were treated in their family units and within their "communities"?

I'd like to thank everybody again, and to Tizme for the ECPAT information. I WILL follow up on this cautiously. Kat, to shed some light..... over a year ago, they had articles in the BKK Post, I believe it was, stating that approximately 50% of thai girls (pre/early pubescent years) growing up in the outer provinces and villages get sexually molested by their father, their brother, or friends of the family members. Alcoholism is a big contributing factor. Disgusting that the figures could be so high and left alone for so long, but I do believe that Thai social services are working on the situation. I know that offers little consolation, but it's a start.

Truely shocking.

Thanks Rascal. Yes, I've been reading a lot of material about the nature of abuse in Thailand (and to a smaller, and even less documented extent, S.E. Asia). I've also been looking at other developing countries and the tension between "tradition" and human rights. Just for perspective, during my trip to Vang Vieng for 10 days, in a random walk around the surrounding village I found a prepubscent girl that had about 12 cigarette burns up and down her legs, to the point where she could hardly walk. Then later while I was here, I read somewhere that many little girls are often "marked" like this when they are also being sexually abused.

And yes, Rod, this is a global problem. However, the context and attitudes toward the problem are very different everywhere, and I am trying to examine the context of Thailand since I am here. And so far, I have seen almost next to nothing on homegrown sexual abuse, which suggests, that it is still not culturally viewed or admitted as a problem.

Late last year, I saw another statistic printed in the BKK Post about a new rape center that opened here in Bangkok. The initial statistics found that of the women who reported rapes, 80% were by people close to the family. But this statistic has also been bandied about as a general rape statistic, so who knows.

Does anyone else have any insigts about the experience of Thai girls within the family or village in regards to abuse?

And truly untrue.

Can you and Bluecat enlighten us as to why you think the statistic seems like bullshit to you? It seems to parallel other related statistics that have been done, so why do you think this one may be bullshit? Please explain if you can, rather than to simply dismiss it at facevalue. It may be bullshit as you say, but since no one seems to really know, including social services, I'd like to know why you can pronounce a topic that some have been analysing for a while with a wave of a hand without offering any shred of insight to the case otherwise.

It may be bullshit as you say, but since no one seems to really know

Since like you, I do not know, I'm trying to use a bit of common sense.

Half of the girls in the outer regions are raped by family members in early/pubescent years.

(I guess that's what they call molested)

Don't you think it is exaggerated?

I think it is.

And by a wide margin,...

But it does not really matter.

You got a bit emotional on the matter and misunderstood me.

I think.

Even one girl molested/raped, not talking about percentages, is one too many,...

Well, it was really hard to understand or misunderstand you, since you barely said anything, except to dismiss. I don't think a direct statement questioning the veracity of a two or three word dismissal is emotional, but if you need to classify it as such, well, whatever.

You're being emotional about the subject of the thread.

Which I very much understand.

Any posting that would make you feel we think the thread is not "important" will make you angry.

And you will react accordingly.

As you did.

And as you do.

We need more people like you.

And I'm not joking.

You two are "one" of the good guys also. Thank the universe there is more than one :o

Sorry if I came off wrong. It's just that I am a little intense, always have been. Even my friends sometimes complain, but thank goodness they keep me around.

Sorry, no 12-yr-old virgins in Thailand -- maybe an ugly 5-yr-old. Seriously, ask any psychologist and they will tell you that a paedophile is similar to a homosexual in that they have a genetic predisposition. In other words you would have the same success changing a paedophile as you would telling a homo that they must be hetero. The second problem is that prostitution is the largest illegal business in Thailand along with drugs. I am approached weekly by minor children, some even knocking on my door at night, and then there are the mothers attempting to drop their daughters off at my house. Since I am a single, wealthy man iliving in Thailand, they see me as a cash cow. So far I have resisted any temptation only because I fear going to jail. Let's be honest, though, how many single males would turn down a gorgeous 17-yr-old coming to their hotel room at night??? I've done it, but how long I can continue to do it is difficult to answer. Get over the notion that innocent young girls are being tricked by seedy old farangs. There are a few cases of this, and the farang should be caught, however, the bulk of it is underage prostitutes plying their wares. You can arrest the farang, but they will just approach the next one.

Quite an element of truth in this. And it won't just be 17 year olds who can easily apppear 18, but often girls as young as 12 or 13 with fake IDs. Once the deed is done they'll tell you their real age and threaten to cry rape to the police unless their victim can be extremely apologetic and even more generous.

Beware the games children play. The girls who play this game are very smart.
