PTP and Thaksin inherited this crisis as well.

...however he did not inherit it alone as in 2001. Not familiar with the 2001 situation details to compare to todays situation though, but anyway he is on a pretty short leash to do anything that the power holders see as negative.

  • I think the country is in worse troubles than 1997. Household debt is at (possibly) an all time high.   Forget Thaksin - yesterday's man anyway - and he's only stating the obvious. The count

And back in 1993, long before Thaksin came to power you were lucky to get 38 THB/GBP.

You can't even blame blame Thaksin for the Tom Yam Gung crisis, as he wasn't in power then either.

He won the election and the downside of winning was sorting out that mess. PTP and Thaksin inherited this crisis as well.

Actually Move Forward inherited the crisis. But PT benefited/help inveigle the soft putsch which denied them their election victory and they got banned.

That's also the answer to the poster who asked if they'll ever change or change in time. The last time that came close they massacred their own people. Now they camouflage things a bit better.

Thailand is a kind of Myanmar Lite.

I must have missed the bit where the Move Forward party were elected and formed the government.

Granted that they won more seats than any other party, but not enough seats to form a government, and if they formed the government they would be in power and running the country now.

However they could NOT form a government or even a coalition government, so after a period of trying, the party with the next highest number of seats (in this case, the PTP) was given the opportunity, who could and have formed a coalition government and now run the country.

As the MFP are not in power, how could they have inherited the problem?

You're right. OK - would have inherited. They couldn't form a government because the old clans wanted them out and it wasn't long before they were banned.

Rinse and repeat. The only ones allowed to hold power in Thailand are those allowed to hold power. And that has nothing to do with the vote. Very very sad really. Heartbreaking.

Why is that scumbag saying anything? He should be sharing one of those 30 person prison cells with a hole to poop in.

that must be fake news ... the 10k handout to millions of people (meant to fulfill a campaign promise,

or let's be honest, a vote-buying scheme) was supposed to stimulate the economy ... but as expected,

it seems to have done nothing ... except bring the thaksin clan back to power ...

... as they say, every country gets the government it deserves ...

Poor farang incomes are NOT the focus of the tax changes.  Prior to the proposed changes Thai citizens could earn income outside Thailand basically tax free.  Billions of DOLLARS earning income that when brought back (repatriated) to Thailand were not taxed.  Forget about the million foreigners and think about all the Thais who have more wealth than you can imagine.

Thailand indeed has serious structural issues and the business model they have run has reached its peak.

Whether thaksins ideas to solve the situation are correct is completely another matter - and if they were, would those in power allow implementation of the changes.

Well they didn't last time.

I find it hard to believe after everything that has happened since the last coupe that they allowed this man through the back door to once again be in charge of the country let’s not kid ourselves what he says goes his daughter is just the puppet being controlled by the puppet master !

The thing that I really wonder is whether the PooYais that let Thaksin come back on the same day that his party (eventually) formed the coalition government still think all is ok and their 'plan' worked. "Is everything still going to their plan?" By 'their' I mean the unholy trinity of oligarchs-amart-military/royalists. What did they hope to gain through this? What did they gain? Was it all just to form a coalition with his party so they could still govern and access the power/money? Are they ok with his increasing over-reach? Will they try to shut him down (again) - or is this Thaksin big-footing 'part of their big plan?' Who knows.

Yes, his daughter is a puppet - that's obvious - but interesting fun-fact: she was just named one of the World Economic Forum's 'Young Global Leaders 2025' - are they just deluded, or was there some strategic reason they included her name?
