In a remarkable turn of events, a Chinese tourist was reunited with his backpack containing nearly $14,000 in cash after leaving it in a taxi at Hanoi's Noi Bai International Airport. The incident occurred late on Tuesday when Lai Jian Syun, fresh off a flight from Guangzhou, took a taxi into the city.

Upon reaching his destination, Syun realised he had forgotten his backpack in the taxi. Inside were important personal documents, a laptop, and 100,000 Chinese yuan, equivalent to nearly $14,000. Initially overwhelmed, Syun had no reference for the taxi, having neither a receipt nor any of the driver's details.

Desperate, he returned to the airport, hoping for assistance. At Terminal T2, he encountered Kieu Huy Hung, a dedicated security officer. Despite the language barrier, the two managed to communicate using a phone interpreter app. Hung quickly set the wheels in motion for a recovery operation.

The situation was further complicated by the fact that the taxi was unregistered at the airport, having entered the terminal area without authorisation to solicit passengers. This meant there were no official records or clear security footage capturing the vehicle’s license plate, presenting a considerable challenge for the airport staff.

Nevertheless, demonstrating impressive resilience and resourcefulness, the airport security team employed investigative techniques to track down the driver. Their efforts paid off when the driver was located and agreed to have another taxi return the forgotten backpack from downtown Hanoi back to the airport.

In just over an hour from the initial report of the lost item, Syun was relieved and overjoyed to have his backpack—and its valuable contents—back in his possession.

Syun praised the dedication and efficiency of Hung and the entire airport team, expressing deep gratitude for their help. He acknowledged that without their quick thinking and action, he could have faced significant losses. This incident highlights not only the effectiveness of the airport's security measures but also the commitment of its staff to assist passengers in need.

I've been waiting for this well overdue honest taxi driver story. Doesn't quite beat the Mere Bahn that recently found what was it, 30M in the trash?

But overdue, nonetheless. :coffee1:

You've been waiting for a Vietnamese honest cabbie story have you?
