Russia to jail citizens up to five years in prison for studying English

Independent news outlet The Moscow Times reports that Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has declared the British Council an “undesirable organization”.

 

Any contact with the educational organization will be considered a crime, as the label “undesirable” is equated with “extremist” or “terrorist,” according to Russian laws that seek to persecute and criminalize dissent.

 

Furthermore, Russia will sanction any activity related to the institution, even if it occurs online or outside its borders. Russians will also be barred from taking the English language test, known as IELTS, an official certification that certifies language proficiency, according to The Moscow Times.

I'm as anti-Putin regime as they come but this is misleading.

You certainly can legally study and also teach English in Russia.

Many of the Z type "traditional values" westerners are moving there to start their "careers" doing just that.

There is more than enough real disgusting stuff that the Russian regime does. No need to exagerrate.

For teaching that settled science is wrong and boys can become girls by simply saying so, and then go on to easily be gold medal olympians. They were warned. They refused to take the L. They got defunded.

Which has absolutely zero to do with the OP fake news about Russia jailing people for learning English.

Careful. In case you forgot, Russia pioneered the way with  East Germany on the use of steroids and transformed many of its female athletes into  quasi males. That is how they obtained so many gold medals.  Now all of a sudden, Russia  has discovered  "morality". Russia loves its gulags. It also loves to murder and imprison dissidents. Drunk driving, domestic violence sexual assault, no worries, but not liking Putin or the war in Ukraine - off to Siberia  labour camp you go.
