A sudden storm caused a fishing boat to capsize in a reservoir in Chachoengsao province on the afternoon of 21 June, claiming the life of a 40-year-old man while his younger brother miraculously survived.

The incident occurred at approximately 16:30, at the Khlong Siyad Reservoir in Moo 2, Tha Takiap subdistrict, Tha Takiap district,  Chachoengsao. Local authorities, including district officials and rescue volunteers from Phanom and community-based civil defence teams, were immediately dispatched to the scene after villagers reported a boat had overturned.

Upon arrival, rescue personnel launched boats to search the reservoir. Initial reports confirmed that one man, identified as Mr. Worakrit, had managed to swim ashore, while his brother, Mr. Somphot aged 40, had gone missing beneath the water.

According to Mr. Worakrit, both men had travelled from Sri Maha Pho district in Prachinburi province for a day of fishing at the reservoir. On their way back to shore, they were caught in a sudden downpour accompanied by strong winds and heavy waves that overturned their small fishing boat.

“I threw a water container to my brother so he could hold onto it,” Worakrit recounted. “I grabbed another one and managed to make it to shore. But he didn’t follow. I called out for help from people fishing along the banks.”

At approximately 17:40, rescue teams recovered Mr. Somphot’s body floating near the reservoir’s edge, about 500 metres from the site of the capsize.

Authorities have urged the public to monitor weather forecasts closely before venturing out onto bodies of water.
