Report Thailand Intensifies Crackdown on Scammers and Online Crime

Thailand steps up efforts against scams and online crime with new measures following PM’s upcoming meeting.

 

Thailand has intensified its crackdown on call centre scams, online fraud, and illegal gambling, treating these issues as urgent threats to national security. This move comes as Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra orders immediate action, with the latest developments to be discussed in a high-level meeting on Monday, 23rd June.

 

Government spokesman Jirayu Houngsub shared on Saturday, 21st June, that the government is committed to dismantling criminal networks preying on Thai citizens. Recent measures, including the adjustment of border checkpoints with Cambodia earlier this month, have already resulted in a noticeable decline in scam activities.

 

The government has reacted to a United Nations report highlighting Cambodia as a new global hub for cybercrime, surpassing Myanmar. The UN Office on Drugs and Crime revealed that Cambodia has become the centre for call centre scam operations, prompting concerns over cross-border ramifications for Thailand.

 

Although successful operations have reduced illegal activities along the western border with Myanmar, Jirayu cautioned against complacency. Criminal groups are adapting and shifting operations along the eastern border. He emphasised that Thai nationals collaborating with these syndicates endanger their fellow citizens.

 

“The government will not allow national security to be compromised or our citizens to be deceived any longer,” emphasised Jirayu. Addressing these crimes is now a top priority.

 

The 23rd June meeting will further explore measures to tackle cross-border crime, including drug trafficking, money laundering, cybercrime, and human trafficking. There is a particular focus on threats to national security along Thailand's borders.

 

Authorities have noted a shift in criminal tactics, with individuals now using legitimate means to cross borders where possible, such as obtaining passports to travel to specific Cambodian cities. These cities serve as operational bases for illicit activities.

 

Jirayu confirmed that following Monday's meeting, the government will announce new strategies to bolster defences against transnational cybercrime, aiming for a safer environment for all Thai citizens.

Reminds me of The War on Drugs. any type of scam is impossible to get rid of.  gambling, impossible.  call centers, yes, possible.  a two-person call center?  well, that's harder.  OK, back to my Nigerian Prince about to send me 100,000,000,000,000,000,000.   I do wonder if I'll fall for a scam when I'm like 85 and get emails from my long-lost cousin Billy Bob.   Click this link.   oops.

But now the police is catching up with these criminals,  and everybody whi owns a passport will be put in jail
