Metro Manila is stepping up efforts to combat a surge in HIV infections by distributing free condoms across various establishments. This initiative, spearheaded by the Philippine National AIDS Council (PNAC), aims to reduce transmission rates by targeting high-risk areas.

Condoms will soon be available in bars, bathhouses, spas, and motels, which have been identified as priority zones. Additionally, workplaces, gas stations, tricycle terminals, and health centres will participate in the distribution effort.

PNAC executive director Joselito Feliciano explained, "Our plan is ready, but we're still coordinating with local government units to identify other potential sites." The Department of Health (DOH) will initially supply the condoms, but local governments and private sectors are also encouraged to contribute.

Feliciano emphasised that schools are excluded from this programme. "We're providing people the choice and ensuring access. It's up to them to decide," he stated.

The urgency of this initiative is underscored by alarming statistics. The DOH reported a staggering 500-percent increase in HIV cases among those aged 15 to 25 from 2010 to 2023. The first quarter of 2023 alone saw 5,101 confirmed cases, marking a 50 percent jump from the previous year's figures.

This move reflects a broader public health strategy to empower individuals with the tools they need to make informed decisions, aiming to curb the spread of HIV through accessible prevention methods.

The success of these efforts hinges on collaboration between governmental, local, and private entities. With the DOH leading initial supplies, the initiative calls for a shared responsibility to ensure sustainability.

Rising HIV rates in the Philippines present a significant challenge, requiring innovative and inclusive approaches. By increasing access to preventive measures, Metro Manila sets a proactive example in addressing this pressing health issue.
