MMA superstar Conor McGregor has suffered another legal defeat after losing his appeal against a civil jury's finding that he sexually assaulted a woman. In November, McGregor was ordered by the court to pay Nikita Hand £206,000 in damages plus costs after she accused him of raping her in a Dublin hotel in 2018. The appeal was dismissed by three senior judges at Dublin's Court of Appeal.

McGregor's legal team challenged the original ruling over how police interview statements were presented, arguing his "no comment" responses should have been inadmissible. They also questioned the phrasing on a jury issue paper, suggesting it should have specified "sexual assault" rather than merely "assault."

However, the judges found no merit in these arguments, stating the jury would not have been confused.

Nikita Hand, supported by friends, was present at the hearing, while McGregor was absent.

Hand expressed gratitude for the support received and shared the emotional toll of the appeal process. "This appeal has retraumatised me," she stated but expressed hope for closure and healing.

McGregor reiterated his stance, maintaining that the encounter was consensual and raising concerns about the handling of his police interviews, in which he largely remained silent.

Nonetheless, his appeal was dismissed in full, with the judges agreeing the jury would not have drawn improper conclusions from his interview responses, reported the BBC.

In another setback, McGregor's friend James Lawrence also lost his appeal regarding court costs, despite the jury finding he did not assault Hand. Both men had been accused of rape, which they denied, claiming the encounter was consensual.

The appeal court also addressed McGregor's attempt to introduce new evidence from witnesses who claimed to have seen someone else cause Hand's alleged injuries. However, this attempt was dropped, leading to further costs awarded to Hand.

With the appeal now settled, the court's decision stands, leaving McGregor liable for the damages awarded. The case underscores the complexities surrounding civil assault trials and the stringent standards appeals must meet.
