This ones been a tricky one for me to translate myself. I've tried Sea Building petroleum (Taleh Bann Benzin) but that just gives a lot of blank looks and puzzled faces!

Any ideas?

A land oilfield rig is called a "เครื่องเจาะน้ำมัน" (kreung joh nahmmun) if that is any help. I guess an offshore rig would be called a kreung joh nahmmun ni talay. A production platform would possibly be a "tee palid nahmmun ni talay". Advise you to get a second opinion on this.

All I can do is piece the two together. Lexitron dictionary gives

oil rig [N] ; อุปกรณ์ขุดเจาะน้ำมัน

and

offshore [ADJ] ; ซึ่งอยู่ห่างจากฝั่ง

Related. ที่อยู่นอกฝั่ง.

offshore [ADV] ; อยู่ห่างจากฝั่ง

Related. อยู่นอกฝั่ง.

Thai does not arrange nouns and their descriptions like English, so "Taleh Bann Benzin" makes no sense, the way you arranged it would be akin to saying 'a petrol house sea' (if your pronunciation is correct, including tones - if not, even less chance).

If you had said 'baan bensene nai taleh' pronounced like a Thai, somebody might have been able to figure out you were getting at "a petrol house at sea".

Yes, searching for all of the suggestions on Google, Yoot's turns up the most matches (note: I only did image searches). I came across one that was essentially the same as Yoot's suggestion, but with ในทะเล ("nai ta-le", which means "in the sea") added to the end of it:

แท่นขุดเจาะน้ำมันในทะเล - taaen kut joh naam-man nai ta-ley

แท่น (taaen) = platform

ขุด (kut) = dig

เจาะ (joh) = puncture

น้ำมัน (naam-man) = oil, petroleum

ใน (nai) = in

ทะเล (ta-ley) = ocean, sea

As Maedish pointed out, Thai word order is different from English. Thai is a "car red" language, while English is a "red car" language. So the noun comes first, and the words that follow it modify it.

Can't say for sure if this is the official word for it, but if you said that word to anyone in the oil drilling industry, I bet they'd understand it (and probably tell you the offical name for it).
