A fatal incident occurred in a steel foundry located in Sri Maha Phot district, Prachinburi province, resulting in the death of one Myanmar worker and leaving another seriously injured.

At approximately 02:00 on 12 August, police and rescue teams were alerted to an incident at a steel melting factory on Route 304, Khlong Rang-Khao Hin Son area, Nong Phrong subdistrict. Upon arrival, authorities discovered the charred body of a Myanmar labourer near a furnace on the second floor of the factory. Another Myanmar worker was rushed to Kasemrat Prachinburi Hospital with severe burns after being scalded by molten steel.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the factory, owned by a Thai company, employs mainly Myanmar workers under the MOU scheme, comprising approximately 80% of the workforce.

The incident was caused when an overhead crane malfunctioned while transporting a crucible containing molten steel heated to about 1,600 degrees Celsius. The crane failed to stop as intended, causing the molten steel to spill and splash over the workers below.

Following the incident, the Prachinburi Provincial Industry Office ordered the foundry to halt operations in the affected area for 30 days pending safety improvements. Labour protection authorities, local police and the subdistrict administrative organisation have jointly launched investigations into the cause of the incident and compliance with safety regulations.

The district chief of Sri Maha Phot has instructed the company to implement urgent safety measures and provide proper compensation and medical support to the victims and their families.

The local authorities continue to examine evidence from the scene and plan further safety inspections of the facility’s equipment and structure to prevent future tragedies.
