The skyscrapers rising across its major cities not only redefine urban architecture but also stand as symbols of Vietnam’s bold vision for the future. From Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi and Da Nang, these towering structures encapsulate the country’s journey towards modernization and global competitiveness.

 

Landmark 81: A Testament to Vietnam’s Resolve

 

Located in the bustling metropolis of Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Landmark 81 is Vietnam’s tallest building, soaring to a remarkable height of 461.3 metres. This architectural marvel, completed in July 2018, stands as a beacon of Vietnam’s rise, both literally and metaphorically. Developed by the nation’s foremost conglomerate, Vingroup, and spearheaded by the domestic construction giant Coteccons, Landmark 81 symbolizes a new era where Vietnamese firms lead large-scale projects, a significant departure from the past when foreign firms dominated skyscraper construction.

 

The design of Landmark 81 draws inspiration from a bundle of bamboo, a traditional symbol of strength and resilience in Vietnamese culture. This choice reflects the nation's aspirations for sustainable growth and unity. Designed by Atkins, the architectural firm famous for their work on the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the structure took four years and the collaboration of thousands of workers and over 100 partners to complete. Costing $1.5 billion, this investment has transformed not just the skyline but also the economic landscape of Vietnam.

 

Upon completion, Landmark 81 not only became a defining feature of HCMC but also a symbol of the private sector’s vital role in Vietnam’s economic development. The building includes luxurious residential spaces, commercial offices, retail centres, and a hotel, enhancing its stature as a multifaceted hub of activity and prosperity. It marked Vingroup and Vinhomes’ expansion into southern Vietnam, serving as a focal point for international promotional efforts.

 

Bitexco Financial Tower: Pride and Inspiration

 

Further enriching HCMC’s skyline is the Bitexco Financial Tower. Though eclipsed in height by Landmark 81, this 262.5-metre structure remains a defining icon of the city. Commissioned by the Bitexco Group and completed in 2010, its design personifies a stylized lotus bud, a symbol richly embedded in Vietnamese heritage. The incorporation of a helipad on the 52nd floor further underscores its modernity and strategic importance.

 

The Bitexco Financial Tower was envisioned by chairman Vu Quang Hoi, inspired by iconic structures like New York’s Chrysler Building and Malaysia’s Petronas Towers. Hoi’s intent was to create a structure that instilled national pride and reflected Vietnam's rising status on the global stage—a vision realised when CNN named it one of the world’s 20 iconic buildings. Inside, the tower offers expansive commercial space and offices for major domestic and international enterprises, a vital hub for business and innovation.

 

Saigon Marina IFC: A New Financial Hub

 

The latest addition to HCMC's prestigious lineup of skyscrapers is the Saigon Marina International Financial Centre (IFC). Inaugurated in August 2025, this modern structure stands at 240 metres and embodies the city’s ambition to become a significant player in the global financial arena. Its 55 floors include a diverse mix of retail podiums, office spaces, dining venues, and an observation deck, seamlessly integrated through innovative architectural design.

 

A prime example of Transit-Oriented Development, Saigon Marina IFC connects directly to the Ba Son underground station on metro line 1, enhancing accessibility and fostering economic synergy within the city. Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc lauded the building as a "modern structure reflecting innovation and global integration," a sentiment echoed by city vice-chairman Nguyen Van Dung, who described it as a "new symbol of prosperity, representing Vietnam’s green, digital, and globally integrated future."

 

Landmark 72: A Pillar of Hanoi

 

In the capital city, Hanoi, Landmark 72 stands as a towering presence at 350 metres, making it the tallest structure in the capital and second tallest in Vietnam. Constructed in 2011 by South Korea’s Keangnam Enterprises at a cost of $1 billion, this complex includes a 72-story commercial tower and two 48-story residential towers. Located near Hanoi’s Ring Road 3, it symbolized the city’s westward urban expansion during Vietnam’s period of extensive economic integration after joining the World Trade Organization.

 

While it initially served as a symbol of growing foreign investment, particularly from South Korea, financial hurdles later required its sale to AON Holdings, a British risk management and insurance giant, in 2015. This transfer of ownership highlights the dynamic nature of investment and development in Vietnam’s burgeoning real estate market. Despite these challenges, Landmark 72 remains an emblem of Hanoi’s aspirations and its place within the global economy.

 

Lotte Center Hanoi: Merging Tradition with Modernity

 

Another architectural gem in Hanoi is the Lotte Center, completed in 2014. At 272 metres, it blends Vietnam's rich cultural heritage with cutting-edge design, reflecting the traditional ao dai tunic. This innovative design incorporates sky gardens for improved ventilation and energy efficiency, symbolizing a commitment to sustainability. A vibrant hub, it boasts a supermarket, commercial centre, offices, restaurants, and a luxurious hotel, catering to a diverse clientele and reinforcing Hanoi’s position as a modernising urban centre.

 

In 2023, Lotte further expanded its presence with the development of Lotte Mall West Lake Hanoi, a substantial $600-million project featuring a vast commercial space, five-star hotel facilities, serviced apartments, and premium office spaces. This heightened investment highlights Lotte’s confidence in Vietnam's growth prospects and the immense potential of Hanoi’s real estate market.

 

Emerging Icons and Future Prospects

 

As Vietnam continues its upward trajectory, numerous projects are set to elevate the national landscape further. On August 19, the groundbreaking of 250 national property and infrastructure projects underscored the government’s dedication to shaping a modern and prosperous Vietnam. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh expressed optimism, stating, "Each project will be a piece of the puzzle that makes the nation shine."

 

Among these initiatives, the Da Nang Downtown project by Sun Group stands out, with plans for a 69-story, 408-metre tower near the Han River. Inspired by the five elements and the ao dai, the tower will feature a flame-shaped crown, potentially becoming Vietnam’s second tallest building. Spanning 77 hectares, this project is poised to become a landmark in the central region, encompassing a hotel, offices, apartments, commercial spaces, and an observation deck.

 

Equally ambitious is the North Hanoi Smart City project in Dong Anh, developed by property developer BRG and Japan’s Sumitomo. With a staggering investment of $4.2 billion, the project will span 272 hectares, aimed for completion by 2032. Its centrepiece, a 108-story financial-commercial tower, aspires to set the benchmark for urban development by achieving carbon neutrality and attracting global investors, as articulated by BRG chairwoman Nguyen Thi Nga.
