Senate hearing descends into shouting match

A routine Senate budget hearing erupted into a bitter political showdown on Tuesday as Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Democratic Senator Gary Peters traded angry accusations over the handling of the war with Iran.

The explosive exchange came as Hegseth sought almost $70 billion in additional military funding, insisting the money was essential to continue the campaign against Tehran.

Instead, he found himself under fierce attack from Peters, who accused the Trump administration of failing both the military and the American people.

'You are the failure'

Peters delivered a blistering opening salvo, arguing that the administration had no clear strategy for victory despite mounting casualties and growing instability across the Middle East.

"Secretary Hegseth, despite your failure to win this war, you are back before Congress asking for almost $70 billion in additional funding," Peters said.

"You're asking the American people for a blank cheque because the Trump administration's efforts have been an utter and complete failure."

The Michigan senator pointed to the deaths of 17 US service members, continued Iranian missile attacks and Tehran's effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz as evidence the military campaign was falling short of its objectives.

He insisted American troops were not to blame.

"You, sir, are the failure," Peters fired back. "Not the men and women on the front line. They serve with honour and distinction. But without a winning strategy, their leaders have failed them."

Hegseth hits back

Hegseth rejected the criticism in equally forceful terms, accusing Peters of insulting the sacrifice made by American troops.

"I think your characterisation of this effort as a failure is reckless and irresponsible," he said.

"It smears the sacrifice of the troops who are risking their lives to ensure Iran never gets a nuclear weapon."

The Defence Secretary then turned the attack back on Democrats.

"Shame on you and others who call this a quagmire and a failure," Hegseth said.

"Either you support the warfighter or you don't."

Funding row boils over

The confrontation quickly shifted from military strategy to defence spending.

Peters argued the administration already had enormous resources and claimed the real problem was poor leadership rather than a lack of money.

"It's not a question of funding," he said. "It's a question of leadership and understanding what it takes to actually win."

Hegseth responded by accusing Democrats of blocking military funding for political reasons.

He claimed their opposition was prolonging the conflict and even suggested critics were suffering from "Trump derangement syndrome," saying partisan politics was standing in the way of victory.

War shows no sign of ending

The heated exchange comes as fighting between the United States and Iran continues to intensify.

Iran has maintained pressure on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz while continuing attacks against US military assets across the Middle East.

The Pentagon has confirmed growing numbers of casualties as American forces carry out repeated strikes against Iranian military infrastructure.

Fresh ceasefire hopes

Despite the worsening conflict, President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that Iran was now "desperately" seeking another ceasefire.

Previous peace efforts, including a 60-day agreement brokered with Pakistani assistance, collapsed after both sides accused each other of violating the deal.

For now, however, the fighting continues, with Washington pressing Congress for more funding while political divisions over the war grow ever more bitter.
