Do you consider colored bedsheets decadent and lower-class?

Featured Replies

Dear Folks,

For many years, even after colored bedsheets gradually rose in popularity, especially among the plebeian classes, I still never gave in. I always chose white. And, I grew up in a household where white was not just the norm, but the ONLY color considered half-way acceptable.

Then, after I came to Thailand, I found that white bedsheets were less frequently stocked in the better retailers in town.

Also, buying bedsheets from Amazon, meaning Amazon China, before it went belly up, one mostly saw colored, and not white, if one wanted good quality cotton.

Also, in most hotels, the sheets are white.

Even today, I sleep better on white cotton sheets, since colored bedsheets are just too exciting for me when it gets close to my bedtime.

Mainly, I think that this shift to colored sheets was driven mostly by the lower classes, probably the same ones who did not have easy access to washing machines.

So, using colored bedsheets:  Decadent?

And, which colors  do you consider to be the most decadent

(No need to use Pantone colors, here, though.)

I hope I can soon import some white sheets from China this summer, during the raining season.

Best regards,

Gamma

Note: Why the shift to colored vs white, according to the All-Time Sage...???

"Gemini Overview

Colored bed sheets became widely popular in the 1950s and 1960s. Driven by a post-war economic boom and advancements in screen-printing and colorfast synthetic dyes, manufacturers transitioned from traditional white sheets to vivid, pastel, and patterned designs.

Prior to this shift, bed linens were almost exclusively white, which symbolized cleanliness, hygiene, and wealth. [1, 2]

The Timeline of Colored Bed Sheets:

  • Pre-1950s: White was the standard for household bedding. While wealthy elites occasionally used dyed fabrics like silk and velvet in earlier centuries, mass-market sheets were strictly monochrome. [1, 2]

  • The 1950s: Bright "ice-cream" shades became a major focus for home interiors, sparking early demand for sheets in bubblegum pink, baby blue, and pistachio green. [1, 2]

  • The 1960s: Screen printing technology and color-fast dyes improved. Multi-colored printed bed sheets flooded the American market, including bold geometric shapes, pop-art styles, and patterned sheets for children. [1, 2]

  • 1970s & 1980s: The introduction of polyester and permanent-press blends made colored, wrinkle-free sheets a low-maintenance, everyday staple. [1, 2]

  • 1990s & Beyond: While modern consumers still favor a wide spectrum of colors, luxury hotels notably transitioned back to all-white linens to signify an immaculate, spa-like experience. "

No, but I am from New England.

We, in New England, are descended from Puritans.

We prize purity, cleanliness, thrift, and wealth.

To me, nothing screams wealth and good breeding like high-quality, high-thread-count, WHITE cotton sheets.

And, I grew up in a household where white was not just the norm, but the ONLY color considered half-way acceptable.

Down in many places in the American south, white sheets served a dual purpose.

By the way, you can buy white sheets --quite sturdy ones at that--any day of the week @ IKEA.

No one cares. They have colored bleach now. Even white people can buy it without looking around. 😁

Thanks for the info about IKEA and 100%-cotton sheets.

I just hope you are correct.

I will NOT accept any blending of fibers (fibres)....ever.

In other words: I believe in complete segregation of fibers.

Wait: It is NOT colored bleach. Rather, it is a bleach like product which is considered safe for cleaning colored clothing.

Still, there is nothing like bleach, and I even love the smell of it.

The smell of bleach reminds me of the uni locker rooms, and the swimming pool showers during my youth.

Everything was so much cleaner, back in my day.

WTF - how on earth does the colour of the bed sheets affect you when your eyes are closed and the lights are off? This is just another bonkers topic from someone with mental health issues.

The pure white of fresh bed sheets is soothing, and sleep promoting.

But, when sheets come in colors, this is just too exciting to see, an hour before one nods off.

This is no joke.

I have done tests.

White promotes sleep; and colored bed sheets act as an environmental agent which inhibits sleep.

This is why I NEVER shop at IKEA, and would never shop there for bed sheets.

What kind of an individual uses IKEA products for....ANYTHING, is what I often wonder.

Maybe someone furnishing a doll house?

IKEA Thailand does not offer flat sheets in all cotton.

They only have these on offer, fitted sheets.

I think the quality might also be suspect.

I will need to buy from China.

Robinson does have all cotton sheets that are quite decent.

But, the pricing is through the roof.

They must consider bed sheets to be a luxury item, or something.

I use a cream coloured sheet and sleep on it for around a fortnight with the aircon and fans off and try not to wriggle around too much. Invariably, I sweat like a glass blower's ar$e.

I then knock them out on ebay as copies of the Turin shroud. My website is titled 'God me up'.

It's actually quite a lucrative business.

Speaking of GFs, I think local women do not care much about top sheets.

And, they seem to not even know about the comfort of cotton.

Worst of all, these same women love sheets with weird designs of animals printed right in the middle of the sheets and pillow cases.

How could one sleep?

Probably they don't even remove the sales stickers, either.

Yeah I run 1000 thread count black skeets.

Good for hiding love juice stains.

Has the OP ever considered maybe directing some of his time and energy to perhaps volunteering to help some poor thai people in some areas? Obviously he is bored and something a bit more important to worry about other then the color of sheets might be much more rewarding and interesting. Why not direct that energy and concern to help some people rather than yet another weird post? Just a thought.

Work permit needed!! And it's not a flippant remark. I narrowly avoided an immigration raid a few years ago on Phangan Island where I was teaching Thai and English to the Burmese migrant kids. My fellow Burmese teacher (fully-qualified teacher etc) got a week in a Thai jail...

I too like white flat sheets and find them extremely difficult to source here. I took them from my last nice hotel I stayed and was never billed. Or just bring your old white flat sheets with you and swap them for each night you stay at the hotel. I'm just applying my self imposed incentive ( free sheets ) and usually leave a big tip so the maid is less likely to expose my theft.

I know it isn't ethical but what choice do you have? Sleeping on colored sheets isn't manly.

I do not care about colours. I care about comfort, linen or Supima quality, although both are expensive in Thailand.

So what is the price, per sheet, flat sheet, for Supima quality here in Thailand?

This I would like to hear.

Say either king or queen size sheets...

Hospitals and asylums have white sheets, so for some people it probably feels like home.

😉

When colours meet science

The colours most commonly associated with a relaxing bedroom are:

  • Soft blue – often considered the most calming and can create a sense of coolness.

  • Sage green – relaxing and connected to nature.

  • Warm beige, sand, or oatmeal – soft, neutral, and comforting.

  • Light grey – calming if it’s a warm grey rather than a cold steel grey.

  • Muted earthy tones – such as taupe or soft olive.

Bright colours like red, orange, and vivid yellow tend to be more stimulating. Very stark pure white can feel clean and fresh, but some people associate it with hospitals or hotels rather than a cozy bedroom.

The fabric usually matters more than the colour. High-quality linen or Supima cotton that feels comfortable against your skin is likely to have a greater effect on sleep than the exact shade. If I had to choose, I’d go with a natural linen, sand, or soft sage green.

White sheets are for insane asylums or welfare queens. I can't believe people are arguing over the color of sheets.

Colored bed sheets serve the exact same purpose as a loud Songkran shirts as it is a perfect camouflage so nobody notices when you puke yourself to death.

Nothing wrong with pimping the bedroom now and then when you get bored. Turn it into a sexy room with a few adult toys, a swing

Nasty. We engage in polite, consensual intercourse wherein our anatomies maintain a respectful six inch minimum distance at all times, sealed in multiple rubbery shields so that no secretions, squirts, or surprise butt sweat desecrate our 900 thread bleach white bedsheets
