UN Chief Condemns Gaza Violence, Urges Ceasefire and Aid

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday condemned the unrelenting violence in Gaza, where Israeli forces have reportedly killed at least 31 people since dawn, according to local civil defence. With Israel's military set on capturing Gaza City, international and domestic calls intensify for an end to the nearly two-year conflict, amid a UN-declared famine.

The conflict has displaced most of Gaza's two million residents at least once, as aid agencies caution against escalating the military actions. "Gaza is cluttered with debris, bodies, and possible breaches of international law," Guterres stated, urging for accountability.

Smoke plumes dominated Gaza City's skyline following Israeli strikes, as footage from Agence France-Presse (AFP) confirmed. Displaced resident Aya Daher shared her turmoil, having found temporary refuge outside a hospital after surviving night-long explosions that injured her family.

Gaza’s civil defence reported 31 fatalities due to Israeli actions, including six individuals shot while waiting for aid in the south. The Israeli military, requesting exact locales and times, stated that its operations target "terrorist organisations throughout Gaza."

With restricted media access in Gaza, AFP cannot independently verify these reports. Nonetheless, the Israeli military disclosed plans to intensify operations against Hamas in Gaza City. The defence ministry's civil body, COGAT, announced preparations to relocate the population southward for safety.

The UN estimates that approximately one million people reside in Gaza governorate, compounding the logistical challenges of the city's evacuation, described as "inevitable" by military spokesperson Avichay Adraee, reported the Bangkok Post.

Moreover, the UN World Food Programme alerts that Gaza has reached a critical juncture, with its network of 200 food distribution centres in urgent need of reinstatement. Cindy McCain, its executive director, after visiting the territory, highlighted rising desperation.

Last week, the UN blamed Israel's "systematic obstruction" of aid for declaring a famine in Gaza governorate. Israel's severe constraints, occasionally halting aid during its offensive, are tied to the Hamas attack of October 2023, which set off this conflict and resulted in over a thousand deaths, largely civilians, per AFP metrics.

Israel's military response has led to the deaths of at least 62,966 Palestinians, mostly civilians, as cited by Gaza's health ministry, whose figures the UN considers credible.

Seekers of insight into the situation might gauge the humanitarian and political pressures at play, as international voices steadily increase calls for a ceasefire and humanitarian access to the besieged territory.

There are only a few hundred thousands of Palestinian mother's and children left. It's time to kill them now and fast (sarcasm off).

Murders continue and the world is onlooking.

There are 20 000 Hamas members left to be bought to justice .

I don't know what happens to you? The heat?

Do you think your 20.000 are walking with a badge on their shirt: "I am a HAMAS member. Kill me"

Maybe it's not the heat but another problem.

Would like to see just one time the UN blame Hamas for starting this mess and Hamas for continuing to let Gaza people suffer by not

releasing all hostages and disarming.  Just once.

Once again, there are calls for Israel to end the war/ceasefire. Why are there never calls for Hamas to release the hostages, disarm and surrender?

Sorry sunshine but your meme is total blx. Not all Gazans elected Hamas—voter turnout in the 2006 election was about 74%, with Hamas winning ONLY 44% of the vote, meaning a significant portion didn’t support them. Many Gazans were children or NOT YET BORN during that election, and no elections have occurred since. Economic desperation, lack of alternatives, and Israeli blockades have shaped conditions, limiting choices. Blaming an entire population for the actions of a governing group of thugs overlooks these nuances and dehumanizes civilians in general, many of whom are victims of the conflict themselves. Thats OK with you is it?

The fact remains that Palestinians,  particularly Gazans, are neither liked nor trusted throughout the Middle East.

Are there analogies to help people understand?

A country where native people are driven off their land and murdered, practically wiped out?

A country where immigrants are pouring in, making the natives feel like strangers in their own land?

There must be comparisons with elsewhere.

Then why don't these suffering muslims rebel against Hamas big time? Why did they sit there watching the tunnels built for years? Dance in the street as Hamas raped young girls and paraded them nude around Gaza?  Hide some of the hostages in their homes?  They are all complicit, if you know what that word means.

The term “complicit” implies active participation or consent, which doesn’t apply to an entire population under duress. Gaza’s 2 million residents include diverse perspectives, many suffering from both Hamas’s governance and external conflicts. Holding them collectively responsible is a simplistic point of view and ignores the systemic constraints—blockades, poverty, and violence—that shape their reality. Saying they are all complicit is you dehumanizing civilians and oversimplifying a complex conflict.

That the UN considers Hamas causality lies credible tells you all you need to know about UN in this.

1931: Approximately 175,000 Jews

1946: About 543,000 Jews

1947: Around 630,000 Jews

The period leading up to 1947 saw a significant influx of Jewish immigrants, with over 93,000 arriving between 1940 and 1947 alone. The urgency for a safe haven, given the persecution of Jews in Europe, added impetus to this immigration.

1922: Around 589,000 Muslims lived in Mandatory Palestine.
1931: The Muslim population grew to approximately 759,717.
1945: The Muslim population reached 1,061,270.
1947: The population of Muslims in Palestine was about 1.2 million, making up 60% of the total population of nearly 1.8 million at that time.

Sorry to burst your bubble cupcake...if you are a Muslim and you don't support Hamas then you are apostate.

If you don't know what apostate is or the penalty for being apostate then the bs you are sprouting has been successfully implanted.

So to reiterate...

Exactly. And in 1890, there were only 43,000 Jews and 489,000 Arabs. And the original UN partition plan gave 56% of Palestine to the Jews, even though they made up only 40% of the population (many of whom were recent migrants). Fair, wasn't it?

A clear case of colonisation and subsequent ethnic cleansing. Now just genocide.

Rubbish, they did get a large piece of desert, but they got most of the coast, and the land around the sea of galilee and half the river Jordan; these were the most fertile areas.

Cherry picking, 40% of the population and 56% of the land, yes they got some desert, but most of the coast, and the land around the sea of galilee and half the river Jordan; these were the most fertile areas.

Typical pro-Israeli stance, look how hard done we were.

Yeah, if Moses had turned right instead of left, the Jews would have got all the oil, and the Arabs would have got all the oranges.
