A federal judge has temporarily halted the repatriation of unaccompanied Guatemalan minors in US custody. Some children were mid-flight back to Guatemala when the order came through.

 

The order was issued after lawyers rushed to stop the removals, saying the kids were woken in the middle of the night and would face risks if they returned to their home country. Reports surfaced that the US president's administration, in coordination with Guatemala, sought to repatriate these minors.

 

The case unfolded on Sunday when Judge Sparkle L. Sooknanan intervened, halting its removal amid a holiday weekend. The Department of Justice was asked to provide evidence of parental requests for the children's returns. However, conflicting accounts arose, and the DOJ's response is expected by Friday.

 

Judge Sooknanan ordered the US government to hold off on repatriating the minors, including those already on planes. One aircraft carrying these children was reportedly turned around in Texas, with the affected children expected to return to US custody.

 

Legal service providers informed shelter operators that Guatemala had requested specific children's return to reunite with family, as per notices obtained by CNN.

 

Concerns remain that some children in Guatemala face danger while their ongoing immigration cases are being argued for protection under US law. The lawsuit claims special protections and due process are not being followed.

 

The case, filed in Washington, D.C., involves 10 Guatemalan minors, aged 10 to 17. Their plight highlights fears and confusion among the children about their uncertain future. Legal representatives emphasise that their clients are terrified, with individual stories of abuse and neglect at home.

 

The Office of Refugee Resettlement instructed that children must be travel-ready quickly once notification is received, with all necessary documents and supplies prepared. The unfolding legal debate adds uncertainty to the lives of these young individuals.

Immigration policy is messy, but treating children with dignity shouldn't be partisan. Biden's handling let in a huge influx of kids without enough follow-up. But this specific mess is the Trump admin trying to deport 600+ Guatemalan minors at 3 AM on Labor Day, even with pending cases. A judge stopped it for due process. Kids deserve better from everyone, including the likes of you don't they? Haven't I heard this somewhere before?

I am fully retired and reside in Thailand  ( because I CAN )  I worked starting at the age of 14 and retired at  62 .. still own property, Harley's and firearms in the U.S.  and I vote..  because it counts !  "I am paying " all the tuition costs for my sons college education.   and when we hire people to work for us here,   we pay them well above the norm slave labor prices.  I don't sell anybody short !
