Toyota to Launch Skills Academy in Cambodia by Early 2026

Toyota Tsusho Corporation has announced plans to open a dedicated training academy in Cambodia in early 2026, focusing on automotive skills, spare parts production, and accessories manufacturing. The initiative was confirmed during a high-level meeting in Osaka between Cambodian Minister of Commerce Cham Nimul and Toyota Tsusho executives, including Divisional CEO Harada Shigeru.

The academy will operate with support from Cambodia’s Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training, aiming to strengthen local expertise in the country’s growing automobile sector. Harada praised the Cambodian government for its continued facilitation of Toyota’s investments, including the $36.8 million assembly plant in Phnom Penh’s Special Economic Zone, which began operations in May 2024.

Minister Nimul welcomed the move, highlighting Toyota’s role in job creation and technology transfer. She noted the brand’s popularity among Cambodian consumers, citing its reputation for quality and durability.

The academy is part of Toyota Tsusho’s broader strategy to deepen its footprint in Cambodia, which includes plans to expand production lines. The company has been active in the country since 1993, evolving from vehicle imports to full-scale assembly and now vocational training.

Cambodia’s automotive sector is rapidly expanding, with six operational assembly plants serving the domestic market. Alongside Toyota, manufacturers like Ford, Hyundai, and Kia are helping reduce reliance on imports. Investment momentum continues to build, with Chinese EV giant BYD launching a $32 million assembly facility in Sihanoukville earlier this year.

The Toyota Academy is expected to play a key role in developing a skilled workforce to support this growth, offering training not only for future Toyota employees but also for young Cambodians seeking careers in the automotive industry. The move aligns with government efforts to attract foreign investment and foster sustainable economic development.
