Well its time to buy a chainsaw to start some tree pruning , its mainly smaller trees and bushes. It seems that there are Two main types , Battery operated or Petrol driven. Currently I have a Honda 4 stroke petrol brush cutter , which has been great.

It seems that here in Thailand that there are several makes of chainsaws , so I'm wondering if any one here has a chainsaw / used a chainsaw and could comment on / recommend a chainsaw . - Thanks

I seem to remember that if the blade is longer than 6 inches you need to get a license from the forestry commission ???

When we bought ours, legal length cutting blade/chain was 12" / 30cm. If sold at large DIY stores, then it's probably the legal length.

Don't recall reading about any changes since 2002 ...

I suspect the 6" was tongue in cheek hyperbole. I don't claim to know either way. I just remember that there is a ridiculously short limit.

I'd add that, back home, I loved my 12" electric chainsaw on a stick. It had an extendable pole that allowed me to reach palm fronds up to about 15' off the ground if I really reached for it. I didn't find any extendable gas chainsaws. Probably for a good reason...

Personally prefer gas powered, get a Stihl if you want something reliable. Btw, chainsaws have bars and chains, not blades.

For home use, 12" / 30cm is plenty, as most really wouldn't need much more, nor would actually want to cut anything larger down. Trees add value to any land.

Also, a larger professional saw would be quite expensive, and dangerous in the wrong hands. Tree surgeon was actually one of my 'too many' jobs.

Larger ones illegal for good reason, as only a 'logger' would get their money's worth out of one.

A hired digger for the day, would cost less than a quality professional chainsaw. Also solve having large root left to deal with.

2 of my brothers are golf course superintendents in Texas. They swear by Stihl. Even at home, they buy Stihls. So it's not because the Stihl rep that calls on them has big' uns.

Stihl are the way to go . I worked with a tree service man in Texas who used them as a priority. Husqvarna are also top of the line. Worth the price paid.
