Speaking at a meeting in Hà Nội with the Việt Nam Atomic Energy Institute (VINATOM), he outlined the long-term strategy for nuclear energy, urging a focus on absolute safety and international compliance. General Secretary Lâm stressed that Vietnam's nuclear energy plans must align with international safety standards. Protective measures for people, the environment, and society are paramount, he noted, while pointing to the importance of adhering to guidelines from global atomic energy bodies. The session was attended by key figures, including Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính, emphasising the government’s commitment to this agenda. The call to action included refining policies to bolster nuclear energy amidst global developments. A new national programme on nuclear technology and safety was proposed, aiming to enforce international security benchmarks. This initiative would also focus on enhancing the scientific capabilities essential for the sustainable development of nuclear power. Strengthening the Vietnam Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety's ability to manage and coordinate these efforts was also highlighted. VINATOM, founded in 1979 and now a leading research entity, was urged to continue its pivotal role in advancing nuclear science and technology. With its extensive network of research and technical support units in major cities like Hà Nội, Đà Lạt, and HCM City, VINATOM is poised to remain at the forefront of scientific research, incident response, and human resource training. Investment in research infrastructure was also a focal point, with strategic projects directed at enhancing Vietnam’s nuclear technology. This includes research that would pave the way for mastering technologies linked to rare earth elements, nuclear industries, and digital transformation. Vietnam aims to position itself as a leader in these interconnected fields, utilising nuclear advancements to drive broader technological innovation. Digital transformation features prominently in this strategy. General Secretary Lâm called for the creation of an interconnected environmental radiation monitoring network, which would involve digitising data and ensuring transparent data practices to build public confidence. Embracing technology-driven solutions, such as radiation source mapping and AI for risk assessments, was encouraged to enhance the nation's nuclear safety and efficiency. VINATOM's workforce is robust, comprising 768 employees, including noted professors and scientists. This pool of talent is critical for managing Vietnam's key nuclear facilities, such as the Đà Lạt Nuclear Reactor and the electron beam accelerator in Hà Nội. Such expertise is vital for propelling Vietnam towards mastering complex nuclear technologies and underpinning the nation’s strategic ambitions in this domain. Vietnam’s strategic focus on nuclear energy reflects a broader vision of integrating advanced technology within its national framework, ensuring a safe, sustainable, and innovative path forward. The engagement in digital transformation and international cooperation further underscores Vietnam’s commitment to a secure, science-driven future. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Vietnam News 2025-09-05
