Angela Rayner Resigns Deputy PM and Labour Deputy Over Tax Issue

Featured Replies

Angela Rayner has stepped down as deputy prime minister and housing secretary after a tax blunder on her £800,000 Hove flat. She also resigns as deputy Labour leader, sparking an anticipated leadership contest.

The shakeup follows Sir Laurie Magnus's conclusion that Rayner breached the Ministerial Code despite acting with "integrity." Rayner admitted a lapse in judgement over not seeking tax advice, citing her complex family situation. Her resignation deals a blow to the prime minister, who began the week with a Downing Street reshuffle.

David Lammy steps in as deputy prime minister, assuming the justice secretary role. Meanwhile, Shabana Mahmood and Yvette Cooper take on new roles in the Home Office and Foreign Office, respectively. Steve Reed is the new housing secretary, tasked with delivering the government's ambitious housing plans, reported the BBC.

Further details about the deputy leadership election will emerge soon, possibly posing challenges for Sir Keir's leadership. Although Rayner accepted responsibility, the political fallout persists.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch criticised the timing of her resignation.

Questions on Rayner’s tax payments surfaced last week, leading to legal consultations.

Ultimately, Rayner acknowledged an error due to her disabled son's trust arrangements. She faces an extra £40,000 in stamp duty and possible HMRC fines.

I maybe wrong or misinterpreting, but it seems that Labour Party leaders may have left behind its working class roots. Congratulations on your continuing success to better your own lives.

Now we have a dummy for deputy PM and an Islamist terror supporter as Home Secretary, lovely.

She should have been sacked by Starmer to send a message.

1 down, the rest to go. hopefully soon. looking forward to the march this month.

At first I was all for it with a hate of political sleaze but then reading her back story, I actually felt sorry for her...though she will be on to big bucks appearances on TV shows and a book no doubt so she won't completely sink.

Why do the Labour party keep on about the Conservative Party failing when in power totally agree they were bad

But Labour came in promising change after a year in power

Looks like they are no better and things lately show no better 🤔

Not in the slightest, unless they were the people who gave her the "wrong" advice, It seems as though she managed to screw this up on her own with advice that she even paid for.

A very poor attempt at shifting the blame to the Tory party.

Not just a dummy.

He's behind the Chagos debacle and the racist sentencing guidelines.

Don't get me started on the London Mayor.

Labour are destroying the country.

We desperately need a general election. Could Charles show courage for once in his life?

There will be no GE until this government decides to call one and that is unlikely to be before 2028 at the earliest.

The mask slips again, Jonny. You berate those individuals who refuse to accept the result of the Brexit referendum as anti-democratic, but the very fact that you suggest that the Monarch should refuse giving Royal Ascent and therefore causing a constitutional crisis shows that you only believe in democracy when it suits you.

Clearly you missed the sarcasm Raymond.

Maybe we could have a "peoples vote" seeing as everyone has changed their mind about Labour?😃

They didn't know what they were voting for. 😃

Acting with "integrity"??  She lied about the value of her assets in order to sell an inflated amount to her disabled sons trust to get a house then evaded (not avoided) tax on the purchase, then lied about the "advice" she was given.   Tommy Robinson inflated his income to get a mortgage and was imprisoned for 18 months.

Raynor committed a more severe crime and is deserving of a more significant jail sentence than Robinson for her crimes here.

And no, despite leftist propaganda saying otherwise, Farage did not commit any tax evasion and acted fully within the law.   He is also not demanding that others pay more tax whilst at the same time evading his.
