September 9, 2025Sep 9 Popular Post Cambodia’s aviation sector enters a new era today with the launch of Techo International Airport, a $1.5 billion mega-project set to transform the Kingdom’s connectivity, trade, and tourism. Located 20 kilometres south of Phnom Penh, the new facility replaces the capital’s ageing airport, which closed last night after nearly seven decades of service. Spanning 2,600 hectares across Kandal and Takeo provinces, Techo International is designed to 4F international standards, capable of handling the world’s largest aircraft including the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747-800. It ranks ninth globally among 4F-rated airports and is recognised among the top 11 for architectural scale and design. The airport’s phased development will see capacity grow from 15 million passengers annually to 45 million by 2050. Its dual role as a passenger and cargo hub is expected to unlock new logistics potential, addressing Cambodia’s longstanding limitations in freight handling. “This is a landmark achievement,” said Sin Chansereyvutha, spokesperson for the Civil Aviation Secretariat. “It will elevate Cambodia’s position in the region and attract major airlines.” Economic ripple effects are already visible. Along Samdech Techo Hun Sen Boulevard, the main artery to the airport, high-rise buildings, retail outlets, and financial institutions have mushroomed. Plans are underway to establish a special economic zone nearby, potentially turning the area into a thriving investment corridor. Tourism leaders see the airport as a symbol of modernisation. “It raises our international profile,” said Chhay Sivlin, head of the Cambodia Association of Travel Agents. “I’ve promoted it at global travel fairs, and interest is strong.” While the closure of Phnom Penh International may ease traffic congestion temporarily, experts warn that urban pressures could return as development accelerates. The government has pledged to preserve the old site for national use, with potential for future infrastructure projects. As Techo International Airport begins operations, Cambodia positions itself not just as a regional transport hub, but as a rising player in global commerce and tourism. -2025-09-09 ThaiVisa, c'est aussi en français ThaiVisa, it's also in French
