Traffic Chaos as Crowds Swarm Cambodia’s New Mega-Airport

PHNOM PENH — Cambodia’s newly opened Techo International Airport has become an unexpected magnet for sightseers—and a source of gridlock. Since its soft launch on 9 September, more than 45,000 vehicles have descended on the site, causing severe traffic jams across Kandal and Takeo provinces as curious locals flock to witness the country’s largest aviation project.

The airport, which offers free parking until 15 September, has drawn thousands of families, students, and tourists eager to explore its sleek terminals and sprawling grounds. But the influx has overwhelmed access roads, with hours-long tailbacks reported on key routes leading to the 2,600-hectare complex, located 20 kilometres south of Phnom Penh.

Authorities have urged visitors to follow traffic instructions and avoid obstructing passengers travelling for actual flights. “We’re thrilled by the public interest,” said a senior official from the Civil Aviation Authority, “but we ask everyone to respect the operational flow and help maintain order.”

Built under the initiative of former Prime Minister Hun Sen, Techo International Airport is a joint venture between the Cambodian government and private investors. Originally budgeted at $1.5 billion, the final cost exceeded $2.15 billion. The terminal, designed by a British architect and managed by OCIC, is equipped to handle Airbus A380s and Boeing 747-800s, ranking ninth globally among class 4F airports.

The first flight, operated by Air Cambodia, marked the beginning of operations ahead of the official inauguration on 20 October, to be chaired by Prime Minister Hun Manet. Currently, 28 airlines operate direct routes to the airport, with Etihad Airways and Turkish Airlines expected to join next month.

Despite the congestion, the airport’s debut has sparked national pride and excitement. For many Cambodians, it’s not just an infrastructure milestone—it’s a symbol of modern ambition. But with traffic still snarled and parking set to become paid from 16 September, authorities may need to rethink crowd control before the grand opening.

Until then, Techo International remains both a marvel and a headache—welcoming the world, one jam-packed lane at a time.
