President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has called on all government agencies to support the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) in marking the 50th anniversary of the “Thrilla in Manila,” a historic boxing match between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. This directive, shared by the Presidential Communications Office (PCO), emphasizes statewide participation to commemorate the event from October 26 to 31, 2025. The match, held on October 1, 1975, at the Araneta Coliseum, is celebrated as a significant cultural moment for the Philippines.

Executive Secretary Lucas P. Bersamin outlined in Memorandum Circular No. 99 the importance of this commemoration, stating that the event significantly elevated the Philippines on the global stage at the time. The memorandum mandates that all government-owned or -controlled corporations participate in support of the PSC, which is tasked with leading the organizational efforts. Additionally, local government units, NGOs, and the private sector are encouraged to assist in this endeavor.

The directive underscores collaboration at multiple levels of government and society, stressing the role of education, science, technology, arts, culture, and sports in fostering national pride. PSC is responsible for driving the program and coordinating efforts among various agencies to ensure a successful celebration. The circular highlights the government’s commitment to prioritizing sports and culture as part of its state policy to nurture patriotism.

Recently, boxing icon Manny Pacquiao made a courtesy call to President Marcos, seeking support for the anniversary celebration. This highlights the continued resonance of the historic match in Philippine sports history and its potential to unite the nation once again.
