TThe presence of female journalists at a recent press conference in Delhi, hosted by the Afghan Taliban's foreign minister, garnered headlines because they had been excluded from a previous event.

This second conference, led by Amir Khan Muttaqi at the Afghan embassy, followed backlash over the exclusion of women journalists from the initial meeting held on Friday. The Afghan minister apologised, claiming the first event's exclusion was unintentional and due to logistical oversights.

In the wake of criticism, Muttaqi explained that the Friday press conference had been arranged at short notice with a limited invite list. The incident drew attention against a backdrop of Afghanistan's discriminatory practices towards women under Taliban rule, igniting anger among Indian politicians and media. The Taliban, who regained power in 2021, face international criticism for their treatment of women, restricting their education and employment opportunities.

Reactions to the exclusion were swift. India's opposition leader Rahul Gandhi criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for permitting the discrimination on Indian soil. Media organisations also condemned the exclusion as discriminatory, with the Editors Guild of India and the Indian Women's Press Corps calling it an affront to constitutional freedoms. Pressure led to a more inclusive event on Sunday, drawing questions about Afghan women's rights.

The incident underscored broader tensions surrounding the Taliban's attempts to gain international recognition, as they navigate criticism over gender policies. India's diplomatic interaction with the Taliban, including talks about reopening its Kabul embassy, highlights ongoing strategic interests. The recent events reflect a complex picture of international diplomacy amid the harsh realities faced by Afghan women.
