Met Chief Promises 'Ruthless' Purge of Rogue Officers

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley has vowed to be "ruthless" in removing officers unfit for service. His commitment follows a BBC Panorama investigation uncovering misogyny, racism, and excessive force at Charing Cross police station. Sir Mark describes the situation as "vile and shocking" and pledges the "biggest clear-out" of rogue officers in Met history.

The investigation brought sharp scrutiny, prompting Rowley to outline extensive measures to improve standards. Since 2022, more than 1,500 officers and staff have been removed. Covert tactics and more rigorous vetting, especially of social media, aim to identify and weed out substandard officers.

Sir Mark acknowledges the profound effect these revelations could have, particularly on women and minority officers. He notes that misconduct reports have tripled, indicating progress. However, he refrains from labelling the Met as "institutionally racist" and focuses on addressing systemic issues causing biases.

A major part of the restructuring includes closing all but two 24-hour police station counters across London, controversially affecting public accessibility. The change, driven by a £260 million budget shortfall, reduces the number of fully operational counters from 37 to just 27, staunchly criticised by community leaders and some assembly members.

Lib Dem assembly member Gareth Roberts raised concerns about Charing Cross, soon to be one of only two 24-hour stations, questioning its suitability given recent scandals. Despite the backlash, Sir Mark cited increased reporting of sexual offences as a sign of growing police confidence.

The sweeping changes in police structure should save approximately 2,900 officer hours monthly. However, community leaders warn of "gaping holes" in policing, especially in areas like Kensington and Chelsea, which will lose all front counters.

Key Takeaways:

  • Sir Mark Rowley is orchestrating a historic clear-out of rogue officers.
  • Rigorous vetting and covert tactics are being intensified to remove misconduct.
  • Budget constraints will close most 24-hour station counters, sparking criticism.

Rowley is not the best person to talk about changes. He may believe in changes I don't know, but he definitely doesn't fight for them. There again London has the ignoramus Khan. Self serving and arrogant. He serves no one other than himself.

How the hell does that address the problem of "rogue officers"?

I wonder why Sadiq Khan has won 3 elections? Could it be that he is good at his job?

Or, as in some other countries, the choice at ballot box is pathetically poor?
