A Toyota Vios crashed into a 7-Eleven convenience store in Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai district early on 24 October 2025, injuring the driver. The crash occurred at 06:55 in Ban Pa Muead, Santisuk Soi Long Chim, Moo 8, Wiang Phang Kham Subdistrict. Rescue teams from the Siam Mae Sai Foundation arrived promptly to assist the injured man, who was taken to Mae Sai Hospital for medical treatment.

The impact damaged the store’s front area, but no staff or customers were hurt. Local officials cordoned off the scene as emergency personnel cleared debris and ensured the area was safe. Witnesses reported that the driver’s car appeared to surge forward unexpectedly before hitting the storefront.

Initial information from the Narenthorn Centre indicated that the driver claimed the car became stuck in gear, causing him to lurch forward uncontrollably. The older-model Toyota Vios accelerated suddenly as the driver stated he tried to adjust the gear, colliding with the shop front and stopping, resting on the protective barrier poles.

Police officers from Mae Sai Station were dispatched to investigate. They reviewed CCTV footage from the convenience store and interviewed witnesses to determine whether mechanical failure or driver error caused the crash. Authorities also noted that the driver has a pre-existing medical condition, though it has not yet been confirmed whether this contributed to the incident.

A full mechanical inspection of the vehicle will be conducted to verify the suspected gear malfunction. The results will form part of the official report to determine responsibility and any liability for property damage. The investigation remains ongoing.

Am sure the investigation will rule the man is lying..A car stuck in gear that mysteriously accelerates so much that it drives the car over that pole is highly unlikely.

Seems there was some confusion between the function of the accelerator and brake pedals.

The times I've renewed my DL doing the reaction test, there's always some people who use both feet. They're instructed not to but you can tell it's their normal driving habit.

Should've installed taller bollards!

My guess is forward gear and too much right foot

Agreed. It looks like something my cute little wife would do though.

After 25 years, she still cannot drive a ten-penny nail into a piece of cornbread.

The drivers excuse is a new one in that it's normally the GPS that malfunctions.

The Vios is predominantly an automatic, so it cannot get stuck in gear, it is in DRIVE or 1st or 2nd. You then press your foot on the brake - The left pedal (if there are only two) The middle one works if there are three.

I blame the 7/11 ....:coffee1:

Only TESLAS behaves like this.
With a TOYOTA, only the driver can be at fault.

Don't automatics require the driver to apply the brake in order to shift out of "Park". Or do we just press the button?

7-11

Aren't these cars automatics...I think the driver speaks BS...if not automatic, did his clutch also fail, and if so, off accelerator, pop it out of gear.

Exactly, if they hadn’t built it there, there wouldn’t have been an accident

In Thailand that applies to all Thai drivers.

 "Ding Dong, Welcome".

At my KIA dealership recently a man did the same thing - right into the huge glass windows.  DRIVER ERROR.  Thank goodness no one was hit or killed in either accident.

It says that the driver has a pre-existing medical condtion.

I've hever heard 'total stupidity' described as a medical condition, but I'm willing to consider that definition.....

Like most Thais in a car ,still drive a car like they are still driving a motorbike , so no surprise that they park on 2 wheels as well !!

No, it's more comfortable

Always used to park this way after a decent pub session. Good place to sleep if it rains. Put a cup down & garnish a few dollars for hair of the dog.🙃🙃
