Thailand Urged to Act on Cybercrime With Emergency Decree

MP Rangsiman Rome has urged the Thailand government to implement an emergency decree to combat transnational cybercrime networks, human trafficking, and money laundering. Highlighting the influx of illicit capital, Rome criticized current measures, noting their ineffectiveness as evidenced by Cambodia's failure to shut down scam operations, which have resumed despite previous efforts. These networks are not only involved in cybercrime; they are also laundering money to legitimate businesses, undermining Thailand's competitive edge.

Rome drew attention to the stalled prosecution in the Prince Group case, hinting at potential political interference. He proposed several strategies, such as establishing international agreements and creating a joint task force with agencies like Interpol. Additionally, he recommended tighter collaboration between the Anti-Money Laundering Office and banks to trace and block illegal funds.

To further address these issues, Rome suggested that the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society amend regulations to facilitate arrests of transnational criminals. He also urged the government to consider declaring a state of emergency during the parliamentary recess to expedite action against scam syndicates. The potential for illicit capital to influence Thai politics, particularly elections, remains a significant concern if these matters aren't resolved.

The government's reaction is awaited, but Rome's call highlights the urgent need to address the growing threat of scam networks to Thailand's economic and political systems.
