Trump Dodges Venezuela Strike Question, Warns Maduro His Days Are ‘Numbered’

Donald Trump refused to say whether the U.S. would launch land strikes on Venezuela, but warned that President Nicolás Maduro’s time in power is “numbered.”

Speaking on CBS 60 Minutes Sunday, Trump was pressed on whether America was on the path to war with the socialist regime. “Probably not,” he replied — before unleashing a blistering attack on Venezuela and Joe Biden, accusing Caracas of “emptying prisons and mental institutions into our country.”

“They’ve dumped hundreds of thousands of people into our country that we didn’t want,” Trump said. “They emptied their insane asylums into the United States because Joe Biden was the worst president in history.”

The remarks came as U.S. military activity around Venezuela intensifies, with 13 deadly strikes on suspected drug-smuggling vessels and growing speculation that Washington could move against the Maduro government, long accused of running a narco-state.

Trump’s Secretary of State Marco Rubio downplayed talk of an invasion, insisting the operations are “counterdrug missions” targeting traffickers, not the Venezuelan government. “This is a very serious problem for the hemisphere,” Rubio said. “It has to be addressed.”

Maduro, facing U.S. narcoterrorism charges and deepening domestic unrest, claimed in a recent televised address that the Trump administration is “manufacturing a war” against him — a claim dismissed by Washington.

Still, Trump’s refusal to rule out military action entirely has fueled speculation that he could use force to force regime change in Caracas, where years of sanctions and political isolation have failed to dislodge Maduro from power.

Key Takeaways

  • Trump says “probably not” when asked if the U.S. will go to war with Venezuela.

  • He warns Maduro’s “days in office are numbered” and blasts Venezuela for sending prisoners to the U.S.

  • U.S. military operations near Venezuela, officially described as counterdrug missions, have heightened regional tensions.
