A stunning revelation: the Louvre's security shortcomings have been laid bare following a high-profile jewellery heist. A French court's report criticises museum leadership for prioritising flashy purchases over security, highlighting a reliance on weak passwords, such as "LOUVRE." The Daylight robbery of precious jewels highlights serious gaps in both physical and cybersecurity.

The Oct. 19 heist saw four men swiftly break in and steal valuable jewellery in minutes. The report reveals that the burglars exploited known weaknesses, including insufficient CCTV coverage across many galleries. Museum director Laurence Descars admitted to long-standing flaws, with the current CCTV count still inadequate for the vast museum space, as analysed in a recent report.

The report criticises the delays in essential security upgrades, initially recommended in 2015, despite improvement efforts, including plans to double CCTV numbers. Past reports revealed dangerously simple passwords guarding sensitive systems, raising concerns over the Louvre's cybersecurity. The French security agency ANSSI had raised alarms years ago about outdated software and weak cyber defences.

In response to these security concerns, there has been a call for the Louvre to strengthen its internal controls. Culture Minister Rachida Dati acknowledged the need for more security measures while vehemently defending the museum. French President Emmanuel Macron has also demanded accelerated improvements to prevent future incidents and restore trust, reported CNN.

With no resignations following the theft, the pressure remains high for the Louvre to address these vulnerabilities. The museum is actively reevaluating its security priorities and completing the necessary enhancements to safeguard its priceless collections.

Key Takeaways

  • The Louvre's security failures were highlighted by a high-profile theft.
  • Concerns focus on inadequate CCTV coverage and weak cybersecurity.
  • Authorities demand accelerated enhancements to prevent future incidents.

Wouldn't have pulled it off if the thieves couldn't spell...

The entire management team should be immediately fired.  They are almost as bad as the BBC!

The word is it's been changed to........... PASSWORD

Recently I transited from offshore on a vessel where the skipper, obviously fed up with transit passengers sucking up their expensive internet bandwidth, changed the wi-fi password to askthecaptain. Of course, during the transit, he remained on the bridge, which is a secure area where transit passengers are not allowed to enter. So whenever they asked a crew member for the wi-fi password, they were told 'Ask the captain' and, taking it literally, were resigned to Facebook-less existence. Meanwhile, a few of us who were able to think outside the box, signed in.
