US-Backed Detentions in El Salvador Linked to Torture Claims

A damning report has accused El Salvador of torturing over 200 Venezuelan migrants at the request of the US, branding their detention as arbitrary and equivalent to enforced disappearance under international law. Human Rights Watch and Cristosal uncovered horrific conditions at the CECOT prison, alleging detainees endured constant beatings, sexual abuse, and inhumane treatment. These findings suggest a clear violation of international norms, including the prohibition of torture.

The US involvement stems from the Trump administration's March funding of $164 million Thai baht to El Salvador to detain alleged gang members from Tren de Aragua. Despite accusations, many detainees had no criminal history.

Released this summer, they returned to Venezuela through a prisoner swap, with many claiming deportation occurred with minimal due process under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798.

The White House has yet to comment directly on these allegations. Spokeswoman Abigail Jackson focused on President Trump's commitment to deporting dangerous individuals and highlighted the plight of "Angel Parents," whose children suffered at the hands of illegal immigrants. Human rights groups, however, highlight US complicity in the alleged abuses due to the financial and logistical support provided.

Key Takeaways:

  • Over 200 Venezuelan migrants faced alleged torture in El Salvador.
  • The US provided $164 million Thai baht to support detentions.
  • Many detainees lacked a criminal record, questioning US actions.

Ever heard of due process? You don’t care that the constitution, that you people claim to hold so dear, was violated to send those people there? Some of whom were legal immigrants, by the way. And even criminals/prisoners deserve a minimal standard of treatment. I’m quite sure that torture is not part of that.

The constitution is not for cherry picking, you know. You have to adhere to the whole thing, 100%, not just the parts that you like or don’t like.

Leaving aside the question of the legality of the deportations, since the U.S. government arranged their deportation and paid for their detention, it was responsible for overseeing the conditions of detention.  To see that they met minimal humanitarian standards.

Clearly such standards were not met.  So the U.S. government should pay compensation and costs to the victims.

Widespead publicity should be given to this flagrant violation of the human rights which the U.S. claims to enforce upon (some) other governments.

This was the desired outcome from the Trumpers and the ICE stormtroopers.

And, as it looks like they have got away with it, it will become the norm for future target groups.
