Cigarette Bust in Marikina Yields Synthetic Drugs

A significant police operation in Marikina City on early Thursday resulted in the seizure of 631 cigarette packs containing synthetic cannabinoids, known locally as “tuklaw.” The Eastern Police District (EPD), in coordination with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), conducted the buy-bust operation at around 2 a.m. in Barangay Nangka, leading to the arrests of four individuals. The seized items, valued at P2,208,500, were allegedly linked to two motorcycle taxi riders and two other men.

The suspects have been identified as “Shane,” 21, “Fin,” 26, and two others, “Zardo” and “Luke,” both 20. In addition to the “tuklaw” cigarettes, authorities found four plastic sachets containing suspected high-grade marijuana (kush), weighing approximately eight grams with an estimated street value of P12,000. The operation highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement to tackle the distribution of synthetic drugs in the region.

Experts underscore the increasing challenge posed by synthetic cannabinoids, which are often disguised in everyday items like cigarettes. The growing presence of these substances in communities raises concerns over public health and safety. Law enforcement agencies emphasize the importance of coordinated operations and community vigilance to combat this issue effectively.

The confiscated evidence has been transferred to the EPD Forensic Unit in Barangay Mauway, Mandaluyong City, for further laboratory examination. The suspects are currently held at the Marikina CPS Custodial Facility and face charges under Article II, Sec 5 and Section 11 of RA 9165.
