A foreign tourist travelling in Thailand received an unexpected lift from immigration officers after his hitchhiking was with an official vehicle. His video of the encounter quickly drew attention online, highlighting the mix of humour and routine procedure involved. The incident immediately generated widespread interest as viewers reacted to the unusual interaction.

The tourist, identified on Tik Tok, as Sam Pilkington hitchhiking from UK to Australia, explained that he was hitchhiking and had simply waved down the next passing vehicle. He soon discovered that the pickup belonged to the Immigration Bureau, whose officers stopped and offered him a ride. He described the journey as a “VIP” experience, as he was the only passenger in the vehicle.

According to his post, the officers locked the doors twice during the trip to ensure safety. Before he was allowed to exit the vehicle, they asked to check his passport and visa as part of standard procedure. The tourist quoted them in his caption: “They did let me out but only after checking my passport and visa.”

The video rapidly gained traction online, with viewers commenting on the tourist’s luck and the unexpected nature of the encounter. Many Thai social media users noted that the incident reflected the helpfulness and friendliness of Thai people, including immigration officers. The post also sparked broader discussion about hitchhiking in Thailand and the security protocols followed by authorities.

Commenters observed that the officers appeared to balance official responsibilities with a willingness to assist a traveller. Others mentioned that hitchhiking, while usually safe, can sometimes lead to unpredictable or surprising situations. The clip served as a reminder that encounters between visitors and law enforcement can combine both hospitality and regulation.

The Immigration Bureau has not released a statement regarding the incident, and no further action has been reported. The video remains widely shared, prompting ongoing amusement and practical reflection among viewers.

Key Takeaways

• A foreign tourist unintentionally hitchhiked with immigration officers who offered him a lift.

• The officers followed protocol by securing him in the vehicle and checking his passport and visa.

• The incident prompted online discussion about Thai hospitality and travel safety.

So, hitchhiking is 'safe' in Thailand (as long as you travel locked up in an Immigration vehicle)? 😂

I once picked up five monks, would never pick up a tourist or be killed by taxi Mafia

Well that was nice of them.  At least he didn't end up in Immigration Detention and earmarked for deportation.

' Old misery guts' was the term used by my parents to describe those for whom the glass was always half empty.

And what term did they use when the glass was always half full?

The law is clear, you have to be able to identify yourself all the time. The police just did it and now the kiddo gets upset.

Where I came from, the police would not have picked-up a hitchhiker, and we're talking 50+ years back 😉

Giving someone the thumb on the road isn’t illegal here.

Sure hitching is dangerous! But it’s a wonderful way to meet people, adventure at every turn, and the perfect way to explore the real underbelly of the country that you are in!  As a young g man, I hitched all over the U.S. and  Europe, and as an older guy, all over S.E. Asia.  I don’t recommend it for young women or men who are not able to protect themselves.
I remember one driver who asked me if I was worried about being picked up by a psychopathic axe murderer? I told him the odds against there being TWO psychopathic axe murderers in a car at the same time would be astronomical. He never said another word the entire ride…  😜

Brought back a lot of memories from the 60’s and 70’s when hitchhiking was a safe, fun and cheap way to travel.

I only managed Europe and North Africa but quite a few did the big one,UK to Australia.
Impossible now of course but in those times the world was a much safer and friendlier place.Ahhhhhh.

Where do you come from? Im from the UK and I got picked up by two coppers once while hitching a ride to work. They said they felt sorry for me lol. They were very friendly, except for one odd moment when there was a pause in the conversation and one of them looked at me in the mirror, and said "do I know you?", insinuating that I might actually be "known" to the police. I just replied, I've never been nicked and I don't generally hang out with "filth" so I doubt it. Luckily he found it amusing and laughed.

Seeing what they most likely assumed was a poor hitchhiker, immigration probably thought they had a good chance of an easy nick. Still, he had quite the experience and got some content. Immigration likely happy too as it could be perceived they look helpful. Win Win.

I once picked up a hitch hiker he asked me wasn't I worried that he may be a serial killer.

I replied unlikely, what are the odds on 2 unrelated serial killers in a car at the same time. 😏
