November 23, 2025Nov 23 Thailand’s most bizarre Xmas tree For more than a decade, Bangkok shopping malls have put up huge decorated trees. This is a Buddhist country & nobody I know really celebrates Xmas. I mean, an Advent calendar for 24 days, stockings hung by the chimney with care, chestnuts roasting on the hearth, mince pies, mulled wine. How about you? Do you go round to your neighbours singing beloved Xmas carols, expecting to be invited in for a spiked eggnog or a hot rum toddy? How’d that go for you? And, of course, a Xmas tree. You can buy real firs at Thai Watsadu. The fragrance of the forest is gone but all the needles are already gone so cleanup is a cinch. I have fun every year looking at the displays of giant fake Xmas trees at 30°. But Siam Paragon decided to do something different this year. They erected a black Xmas tree, presumably in mourning the Queen Mother. But then they decorated it with festive, colourful Xmas ornaments. Hm, Merry Xmas at a funeral, anyone?
