Travel Insurance for short visit outside of Thailand

Featured Replies

Hi All
Planning a short trip from Thailand with the family to Japan over Christmas / New Year period.

What travel insurance options are available here in Thailand to purchase for me as a foreigner and the Thai family members?

Several insurers in Thailand offer travel insurance. Check the offerings from the local offices of Chubb, AXA, and AIG. Or better yet, engage a local insurance broker to assist you in finding an option that best suits you.

I've previously bought from AXA Thailand, easy to buy online (https://direct.axa.co.th/travel/inter/Index) and the price seemed OK to me (was cheap enough I didn't bother to survey the market).  If it was money well spent or not I am pleased to say I have no idea as did not need it.

Has anyone actually tried to use AxA?  That is the travel insurance I usually buy because it's one of the less expensive options, but until you actually have to use it, which is hopefully never, there is no way to know how good it is.

I always use MSIG.

Like some others, I always use AXA.  Very easy to buy and not expensive.  However, fortunately, I've never had to make a claim.

I use AXA for Travel as I earlier had excellent experience with them for domestic health insurance in Thailand which unfortunately I did have to claim on several times.

I'd like to jump on this topic. I am planning a trip back to the UK next March 2026 and looking at travel insurance. A major hurdle (maybe)  is in Nov 2023, I was hospitalized in a Bangkok, for about 8 days, receiving treatment in the cardio centre. .  Therefore I have a pre existing condition to declare, pulmonary hypertension.  It is under control with medication and I go for 3 month checkups. Last week was my last visit and the cardiologist wrote me a note, basically saying I suffered from PAH, but was healthy to travel.

Can anyone recommend a good insurance company,  I have had a look at Axa already... My trip is only for 3 weeks.

I have done a bit of research with AI about NHS cover and as a non resident UK I could well encounter issues if things go wobbly.....

Some travel insurers will allow a waiver for pre-existing conditions. It may come in the form of cover for unexpected exacerbations of a known condition.

I don't think any of the Thai-based insurers will provide this as their travel policies are not designed to be closely underwritten, but instead are checkbox type applications with standard wording and exclusions that the local office can't amend or supplement.

There are insurers and brokers in the UK and Europe specializing in this type of thing. That's probably your best place to start to look. An internet search may help.

Bangkok Bank apparently now offers travel insurance, so I was planning on using them. Any experiences?
