Trump’s Envoy Heads to Kremlin for Critical Peace Talks

US President Donald Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, is scheduled to hold pivotal talks at the Kremlin next week, amid ongoing efforts to forge a peace deal to end the conflict in Ukraine. The talks, confirmed by Vladimir Putin's aide Yuri Ushakov, follow a "common understanding" reportedly reached between Ukraine and the White House on a possible peace agreement framework. As tensions simmer, both sides are urged to address factors that have contributed to years of conflict, with the US aiming to press ahead with discussions.

This development comes on the heels of a 28-point draft proposal that Trump says has been refined with feedback from both sides. US Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll will also be on assignment in Ukraine, highlighting the high-stakes nature of these diplomatic engagements. Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law, who has previously served as an advisor in White House diplomatic conversations, might also be in Moscow.

Responses are mixed; the Kremlin has expressed concerns about the changes made to the original US proposal, while Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov hinted at challenges if substantial amendments have been introduced. Meanwhile, Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, is planning to discuss "sensitive points" with Trump. American efforts appear undeterred, with a potential meeting between Trump and his counterparts Zelensky and Putin floated for when a deal is nearing completion.

Experts are scrutinising the upcoming diplomatic efforts, questioning the feasibility of reaching a resolution after four years of intense conflict. European leaders have shown scepticism, with French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressing ongoing military support for Ukraine. While the US and Ukraine report progress, numerous sticking points remain, particularly in relation to territory and security guarantees that Russia desires, reported the BBC.

Key Takeaways:

  • Steve Witkoff to visit Kremlin as US aims to end Ukraine conflict.
  • 28-point peace plan draft is under discussion; changes are questioned by Russia.
  • Ongoing diplomatic talks with potential for resolution remain uncertain.

So Mr Putin , what do you want us to do next ?  You say jump and we answer how high ?

Hey Steve, whatever you do don't put much pressure on Putin or his associates, as he's a really good guy and I just don't want to make his life difficult. Besides he has lots of Kompromat on me and I don't want to take a risk that he'll release any of that. And by now people sort of know that I'm his lapdog, so it's not like it's going to look bad, or anything.

the original US proposal

No, more like dictated Russian demands. Of which info was slipped by Rubio btw, and leaked.

It might be a good idea for Witkoff to checkout housing possibilities while in Russia.

He’s going to need somewhere to hide when justice comes knocking.

Hes there to beg for the photos Putin has of him and Clinton?

Seems like Trump goes begging to Putin just about every other week now.

I don't think he is on the wrong side here, I just think he is a very weak negotiator, allowing Russia to dictate all terms. Too nice and kind in a way, with no experience in these matters.

It's mind boggling that the US sent him to negotiate with Russia. They are too experienced, and on a complete other level in these talks.

The only credential Steve Witkoff has was that he was a fellow real estate guy and golf buddy of Trump. He is a useful idiot for Putin. Compare that to Biden’s chief negotiator with Russia, Wendy Sherman who has been a fixture in foreign policy for several decades and a reputation as a shrewd and determined negotiator. She wouldn’t let the Russian get away with any baloney.

Agree 👍

Comrade Witcoff tipping off Ushakov about Zelensky's upcoming visit to the USA to ensure Putin speaks to Trump first.

YU: Ok, that sounds good. Sounds good.

SW: And here’s one more thing: Zelenskiy is coming to the White House on Friday.

YU: I know that. [chuckles]

SW: I will go to that meeting because they want me there, but I think if possible we have the call with your boss before that Friday meeting.

YU: Before, before — yeah?

Pass the sickbag, Alice, there's a traitor (or two) in the White House.

I didn't miss anything. I was referring to the "original" 28 points plan.

Russia (Kremlin) most likely won't accept these new adjusted points, they're still too far from each other (Ukraine/Europe - Russia) to make any deal. These talks have only bought more time for Russia to do more damage with their bombings of civilians and Ukraine's infrastructure. Russia continues as before, or even increases the bombings during every talk. Scum. Now they have even moved many of their bomber planes to a more strategic Kola Peninsula. Russia is never to be trusted. They operate like they're still Soviet Union. War is in their blood, they can't let go of their imperialistic minds, and need to control their neighbouring countries. But guess what, that time is over.

That said, I do think there is a chance for a deal to be made here, but only because Russia is bleeding too much, both economically and with the numbers of fallen men in this war (they just won't admit it).

But make no mistake, Russia will continue to arm themselves for another confrontation with Europe and NATO, in a few years. Especially Germany has recently been clear on that point, and is prepared to do their part to be ready for this.
