Kremlin Dampens Hopes of Imminent Ukraine Peace Deal

The Kremlin has stated it is "premature" to declare a peace deal with Ukraine is near, despite recent discussions. Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov indicated that some countries, including the US, might attempt to hinder these developments. The statement follows a more optimistic note from Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov, who acknowledged some positive aspects in a US-backed proposal for peace.

Contextually, Ushakov mentioned that Russia had received a revised proposal following US and Ukrainian officials' talks, but Russian officials have yet to engage with their American counterparts. A Bloomberg report highlighted a call between Ushakov and Russian economic adviser Kirill Dmitriev, suggesting that Russia aimed to achieve most of its demands in the talks. Meanwhile, President Trump stated that US special envoy Steve Witkoff would visit Moscow next week to further the proposal.

Bloomberg also reported a transcript where Witkoff assured Ushakov about negotiating strategies, describing essential elements like Donetsk and potential land swaps. President Trump, referring to Witkoff as a "dealmaker," said negotiation involves convincing both parties to make sacrifices. However, he had not personally heard the recording.

An American official revealed that Ukraine agreed to a Trump administration-brokered peace deal aimed at halting Russian aggression, although details are still being refined. President Trump expressed optimism on Truth Social about "tremendous progress," noting that discussions have whittled down a 28-point plan to a few unresolved issues, reported CBS News.

Expect Witkoff's upcoming trip to Moscow to finalise the peace plan. The proposal reportedly contains conditions such as Ukraine relinquishing the Donetsk region and halting its NATO ambitions—terms previously rejected by President Zelenskyy.

Key Takeaways

  • Kremlin labels peace deal talks as premature, mentioning potential external disruptions.
  • President Trump shows optimism, highlighting progress on a 28-point peace plan.
  • Scheduled talks in Moscow aim to address remaining disagreements in the proposal.

Don’t expect the Russians to give in to anything. There are many in the Kremlin that think Putin is a bit of a wimp. They want their cake and to eat it.

Both versions are poison pills which neither side will agree to. Key points being NATO membership, troop numbers for Ukraine and territory.

Putin does not seek peace; he needs this war to maintain his grip on power. He is leading Russia toward destruction.

I lost hope a long time ago. All Russia has known throughout its history are despots. Most often cruel, criminal, and bloodthirsty despots. Despots are what holds the Russian empire together, from the Mongol rule, through the Tsars, the Bolsheviks, and now Putin.

With the death of a despot, a period of anarchy follows, which is abruptly ended by another despot, worse than the first.
It is the tragedy of Russia, which has been recurring unchanged for over a millennium, and there is no reason why it should end now.

Putin can't show any weakness as it will be the end of him. He will not stop the war unless he has no other choice.

Below is the economic impact of EU membership on new members (for Eastern European countries, this includes NATO membership), measured in GDP per capita in current currency.

This explains why all these countries, including now Ukraine, were and remain so eager to join the EU and NATO. Membership of these organizations stems the outflow of domestic capital and encourages the inflow of foreign capital. EU and NATO membership is a guarantee of peace and stability.

This, of course, doesn't sit well with Putin. Putin fears the Russians' comparisons between a Ukraine enjoying rapid economic and social development and their homeland, governed by a bloodthirsty, corrupt, greedy, and inept establishment

This fear is particularly justified regarding Ukraine. Russia and Ukraine, especially eastern Ukraine, have close cultural and linguistic ties. Russians living between Moscow and Ukraine would have no difficulty comparing their standard of living with that of Ukraine, and the Kremlin would not be in a position to prevent it, so close are the ties between the two populations.

All Putin wants is a Ukraine cut off from foreign investment and subject to capital flight (just like Russia), perpetually threatened, in a precarious and unstable position.
In other words, a copy of Belarus
.
And it is to prevent Ukraine from suffering the same fate as Belarus that the Ukrainians are fighting like lions.
