Actually Starting Soc Security Sign Up

Featured Replies

I thought this was going to be easy and entirely via Internet.

Having SS sent to Thailand -

Putting aside the issue of filing an 1199 is sending it to Manila

I want to sign up. I was under the impression that I would use realID Sign up for Medicare, see some prompt directing me to Social Security I will easily sign up there and that would be done.

Consulting Grok especially for someone overseas there seems to be all sorts of hoops that I need to jump through. looks like a bit of a nightmare

Could someone provide a bit of enlightenment for me?

I'm ready to sign up for both Medicare and my Social Security pension

Whatever I do will the application be complete if I don't include a routing number and account? Can I be used online sign up for Social Security I understand.

Therefore, is this a bunch of forms going to Manila then?

WHAT IF I JUST USE MY US BANK? Is all this avoided and can sign up online? What about signing up online and then switching it over to Thailand after approval and just using the 1199? Is that possible?

Am I expected to send my passport copy, dob, etc in general mail to Manila?

Can anyone comment on the supporting steps at the very bottom? Thank you

GROK

No, filling out and sending Form SSA-1199 (specifically the Thailand variant, SSA-1199-OP107) to the Federal Benefits Unit (FBU) in Manila is not equivalent to formally signing up for U.S. Social Security benefits.

This form is solely for enrolling in International Direct Deposit (IDD), which sets up electronic payment of existing benefits into a Thai bank account. It assumes you already have an approved Social Security claim (e.g., retirement, disability, or survivors benefits) and are simply arranging how payments are delivered abroad.Key Distinctions and Process for Actual EnrollmentTo formally apply for and "sign up" for U.S. Social Security benefits while living in Thailand:Use Form SSA-1 (Application for Retirement Insurance Benefits) or the appropriate equivalent (e.g., SSA-16 for disability benefits).

This is the core application form that establishes your eligibility based on your work credits, earnings history, and other factors. You can download forms from ssa.gov/forms or request them via the FBU in Manila.

Applications for Thailand residents must be submitted to the SSA's FBU at the U.S. Embassy in Manila (1201 Roxas Boulevard, Ermita, Manila, Philippines 0930). Mail it there, or contact them first for guidance (phone: +63-2-5301-6200, Tuesdays/Thursdays 8–11 a.m. Manila time; email: FBU.Manila[at]ssa.gov).

Supporting steps typically required (beyond the application form):Proof of identity and age: Passport, birth certificate, etc.
Proof of U.S. citizenship or eligible non-citizen status: If applicable.
Earnings records: SSA will review your U.S. work history (they maintain this automatically if you've paid into the system).

Did you manage to sign up?   I appled in October via the Website and the process was easy.   But, I'm in the USA and sending my money to a US bank.

I did my application online and eventually had a phone interview with FBU Manila. Took 8 months to get it started.

I signed up online a last year.  https://www.ssa.gov/apply   No documents needed to be mailed.  After the application is processed which takes weeks you are given a phone appointment for Manilla.  No big deal, basic questions about income, work, and family.  It may be a few months before the interview but after approval you get all the back SS from the date you said you wanted to start SS.

During the interview they asked for my bank details but I did not have them available.  I later emailed them the info for my USA bank.

Medicare options are available on the website also.   https://www.ssa.gov/medicare

What sort of details about  work income etc ??

I've not worked in years. Kinda worried about this in particular

I'm signing up online in a few weeks. I plan to direct my pension to US using USA bank and then redirecting to Thailand later.

I'd really like to just send it to Thailand tbh

Can you now sign up online and not need to file form to Manila ?

How is it you signed up online but having SS direct to Thailand? Did you, could you enter Thai bank account details??

** Sorry, I reread

You had interview with Manila despite depositing in US account? Is this normal,? Does everyone get some form of interview? Did you lust your address out here and therefore it was Manila contacting you? Did you call them or them you? What was the Wait time?

Thank you

The key is the address you use as residence. If it's a US address the local SS office will process it. If you have a foreign address, for 40 or 50 different countries FBU Manila does the processing. What bank/country you deposit the money to doesn't matter at all.

I think everyone will get the phone interview.  I am still working part time so they asked me questions about that.  It's no big deal.  Just answer truthfully, it is not an interrogation.   I was worried about it also because I just barely had the required 40 quarters and declared and paid tax on self-employment the previous year to get 3 more quarters, but they really did not care about that.

The Manila SS office handles all SS applications from people living in most Southeast Asian countries.  They forward everything to the USA after checking it.

Lots of people have their SS sent to their Thai banks.  They will tell you what you need to do during the interview.  If to the USA bank they ask for bank info like swift code and account number.

So, if as Rick says everyone gets a call I should probably use my Thai address for consistency. Thanks 👍 If I use USA and on call tell them I'm in Thailand they'll probably just forward if for no other reason than laziness

How does the call work? They call me on my proper phone number here? I call them on Viber????

Thx

Why 8 months? We're you below 67, 65? Definitely hold out but was planning on collecting Q2

Applied 4 months before 70. They sent an email the day before my birthday saying they'd call tomorrow and they didn't. No response for email, they don't answer the phone. Finally got a cold call in November, 2 minute conversation and they sent it off to Baltimore to process. A couple of weeks later the money started. FBU manila is difficult.

They'll forward it because they have no jurisdiction. Best to complete in US and then change address after it's working.

I don't think SSA will let you file an application too far ahead of your selected date to start collecting.  Maybe only 6 months?

You'll almost certainly will have to wait more than 6 months before you receive your first payment.

FBU Manila is worse than useless (at least in my case!).  From your other posts, it seems you're already living in Thailand.  It would be very difficult for you to have your SS application processed as if you're living in USA.  You'll just have to have patience dealing with Manila.

Manila staff know very little, don't thoroughly read any email asking anything remotely complicated, don't answer the phone even during the 4 hours a week they claim they're open for phone calls.  SSA doesn't seem to have any way to submit complaints about poor service.

It's four months.

But I can't because...

I don't have a phone

I'm only going to be there two weeks

So? Complete online and presumably leave bank blank?

Mail the form to Manila??

Also..can anyone comment SCB as all but BBL don't have routing numbers. What do do? Submit Swift code?

You have login to the SS site? Once you have that online is easy.

Yes. I'll do it Jan but the call ...?

You can do it now and set a start date in the future.

Be aware, they tried to give me a larger lump sum by backdating my start date which would have reduced my monthly forever. I waited till 70 to get the max so why reduce it?

You can file entirely online.  After submission, SSA will route it to the right place depending on the residential address you give them.  The office that your application is assigned to will contact you (Manila used email in my case) and set an appointed time and date when they will call you to verify details on your application.  They will call you on the number you include on your application.  You can email Manila if you wish to use a different number to receive their call.  They do seem to respond in a timely manner to that type of email.

SSA is remarkably silent about issues with your application.  After Manila messed up my first application by putting in an illegal date for my benefits to start,  I only found out the cause of the delay by calling the 800-772-1213 number.  I recommend you be proactive in following up with the progress of your application.

Thanks. This was quite helpful.

I'm applying early January. My BD will be about ten weeks out.

I'm applying early not late as you did so don't expect that issue to arise. I will be in US in April two weeks.

1 how many weeks prior to date you want to start benefits is call schedule? I'm thinking quite a few... hopefully

2 I'm still clueless about using a foreign bank signing up online. Not only that but want to use SCB not BBL.. . there is no routing number but swiftcode. If anyone has experience sending money to another bank besides BBL I'd appreciate it.. I do expect and will send off the form (1199?) to Manila after I complete the online process.

Thank you and everyone

I just rec'd an email back from Manila I'd sent about two weeks ago. I asked specific,  pointed, simple questions about using a Thai bank account for SS. I rec'd the same insulting response as always...that is if you want to ask a question include personal, compromising details and send them in unsecured email. It's a nasty, do nothing pattern.

The questions require no personal details and in fact given the question I couldn't have an account for them to reference.

It's pretty much bull<deleted>. I can only hope when the directive is internal and from US I'll fare better.

As an aside - looks like I use the SCB swiftcode. I am concerned about getting stamps at my branch as that branch speaks zero English and I've had bad experiences there. My account has been moved 2x due to branch consolidation. I hope any branch will stamp the form 1199 for me
