Trump Presses for Peace in Thai-Cambodia Conflict

In an effort to maintain peace between Thailand and Cambodia, US President Donald Trump urged both nations to adhere to a ceasefire agreement established earlier in the year. The conflict, which has roots stretching back over a century, recently escalated when Cambodian forces launched an attack on Thai territory, prompting a military response from Thailand. The ceasefire was brokered after the United States threatened to halt tariff negotiations, highlighting Trump's commitment to regional stability.

The border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia saw a dramatic intensification in July with both rocket attacks and airstrikes, raising the specter of a prolonged conflict. As tensions mounted, Trump's administration played a pivotal role in facilitating a halt to the violence, leading to a ceasefire agreement in October. The deal was regarded as a diplomatic win for Trump, who praised it as a crucial step towards lasting peace between the two countries.

Despite the existing agreement, recent clashes have persisted for over 36 hours, according to a BBC report. Meanwhile, Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen criticized the Thai leadership, accusing Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul of betraying past alliances, a claim accompanied by a video and photographs as alleged evidence of betrayal. This accusation highlights ongoing political tensions, even in the face of formal diplomatic efforts to foster peace.

In response to ongoing border issues, Thailand has called for intervention from the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs regarding landmines in the region. Thai officials expressed concerns that the situation could undermine the UN's credibility and the effectiveness of international agreements on landmine bans. This move underscores the broader regional and global implications of the conflict, particularly in terms of disarmament and international security interventions.

Looking ahead, the commitment of both nations to uphold the ceasefire will be critical. International bodies like the UN may play a more prominent role in ensuring compliance and addressing border security concerns. Ongoing diplomatic and political strategies will be essential to prevent further escalations and enhance regional stability, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • The US has urged Thailand and Cambodia to honor their ceasefire agreement amid a historical border conflict.
  • Recent skirmishes have highlighted the fragility of the peace deal brokered in October.
  • Thailand seeks UN intervention over landmine issues to bolster international security efforts.

According to Trump previously, he had already sorted out and stopped the war - have I missed something?

Trump doesn't like this war. Xi doesn't like this war. Anutin appears to have pissed off both Trump and Xi. Pretty impressive, when you think about it.

And how about Hun Sen, who has he upset, apart from Opposition figures in exile or jail?

The trouble is that Xi and Trump are leaning on Thailand, not Cambodia. Perhaps unjustly so, but that is the way things are shaking out.

Chinese investment in Cambodia is staggering. I would have thought this would make Xi lean on Hun Sen more to ensure peace returns.

Industrial Sector: Approximately 54.7 percent of the 2,326 industrial factories in Cambodia are backed by Chinese capital, amounting to a staggering $9.086 billion. This investment is crucial for Cambodia's industrial growth and local raw material production.

Special Economic Zones (SEZs): SEZs have been crucial in attracting Chinese investors, reflecting a broader shift in Cambodia's development strategy. As of the first two months of 2025, China now accounts for nearly 80% of Cambodia’s total investment capital.

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI): Chinese direct investment in Cambodia had reached approximately $3.4 billion in 2024, up from less than $500 million in 2012. This investment has transformed Cambodia's industrial landscape, with more than half of the country's factories owned by Chinese companies.

This could seriously affect his Nobel Prize Prize

Didn't Anutin announce recently that everyone could blow it out their respective  image.png.a37ac65aa72f9b1ded5b92d4a3bfc2c3.png   and that Cambodia must yield to his Thainess?

Also no more dual citizenships. Although in Thailand a foreigner I more likely to get struck by lightning than get citizenships.

Ups Federal park fees for foreigners by 100 dollars plus regular entrance fees.

Start heavy tariffs on Thailand.

As for me I am going to start writing my congressman for a reduction of SS funds and a percentage / year until half is clawed back for all US citizens who stay out of the US more than a year..  As SS is depleted that will be right around the corner..

Finally the tide is changing. Tit for tat.

And he is right because Pattaya is a mere 4,5 to 5 hours by car to the nearest Cambodian border with Thailand !!

Foreign tourists visiting popular US national parks like the Grand Canyon and Yosemite will need to pay an extra fee, the Trump administration says.

The Department of the Interior, which runs the country's national parks, said each international visitor will need to pay $100 (£76) per person on top of existing fees to access 11 of the most popular sites.

From 2026, non-residents will also need to pay more than $250 for an annual pass to the parks, while US citizens and permanent residents will continue to pay $80.

Not too sure there, it could be Hun Sen playing a game to assist the figure in jail - ie, create a bit of drama, stall any immediate elections until such times as the figure in question is free and back to normal - worth a thought.

Both as slippery as eels.
