British Navy Tracks Russian Sub in English Channel for Days

The British navy has confirmed that it tracked a Russian Kilo-class submarine, Krasnodar, for three days as it navigated the English Channel. A British naval supply ship, equipped with a helicopter, was deployed to monitor the submarine and tug Altay. This heightened security measure comes amid growing tensions and perceived underwater threats from Moscow.

British forces had detected the Russian vessels as they entered from the North Sea. The Royal Navy was ready for anti-submarine operations in case the submarine dived, although it remained on the surface despite poor weather. Near Ouessant, the operation shifted to a NATO ally, without disclosing the specific ally's identity.

This incident follows Defence Secretary John Healey's announcement of a major investment to enhance the Royal Navy's capabilities against Russia's underwater activities. Last month, a Russian spy ship reportedly used lasers on Royal Air Force pilots, highlighting ongoing intelligence gathering in UK waters. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte warned Europe of potential Russian threats, urging preparedness for large-scale confrontation.

There has been increased Russian submarine activity near the UK, reportedly rising by a third over two years. To address this, the UK and Norway signed an agreement to jointly operate frigates for submarine tracking. Similar shadowing occurred in July with the Russian sub Novorossiysk, and past incursions by Russian ships have kept UK forces vigilant.

The pattern continues with previous incidents like the monitoring of the Russian reconnaissance aircraft and shadowing of Russian naval groups. These episodes underscore the ongoing maritime tensions, with UK military readiness reflecting the strategic importance placed on protecting its waters.

Key Takeaways:

  • A Russian submarine was tracked by the British navy through the Channel for three days.
  • The UK is enhancing its defence capabilities against increased Russian underwater activities.
  • Ongoing maritime tensions have led to international cooperation for submarine monitoring.

I would have thought the Royal Navy are told what to do, in this case track a submarine, not take care of the people you may support...🙄

Perhaps the Royal Navy knew it wasn't a threat but made sure the Russians knew they were there.....🙄

Sure.  Good idea.  Start WW3 over a sub operating in international waters.

And I see NATO's Mark Rutte is also just chomping at the bit to spark off humanity's destruction.

"RU spy activities"  :cheesy:

Just a little bit paranoid, as why would RU care about anything the UK is doing.   Headliner for more tax money, to defend the country from .... paranoia 🙄

Russia had drones scouting the EU and likely the UK too. Hardly paranoia.

I am ex-Navy and thinking the same thing.

Also, why doesn't the UK invest in fast patrol boats and coastal protection boats that were mothballed to put them in the Channel?

The reason is, this Labour government isn't serious about stopping these boats, as they are future Labour voters.

Of course, the Royal Navy is told what to do by the government of the day.

However, the government in power could be utilising the Royal Navy to far better use by putting fast patrol boats and coastal vessels, many of which were sold off or mothballed, and putting them in the Channel near French waters to deter and force back dinghies before they enter our waters.

It's amazing how certain EU countries are ignoring EU directives and ECHR rules and just totalling refusing entry to migrants, and the UK government does absolutely nothing.

Much of these exercises performed in and around the UK coast and in the North Atlantic, by the Royal Navy, perform exercises known as shadowing, the purpose is to gather as much information as possible on foreign military vessels near our shores, looking for signs of new vessels, new weaponry, upgrades, propulsion etc.
