US President Donald Trump has halted the US green card lottery scheme following a tragic shooting at Brown University. The incident, which resulted in the deaths of two students, has prompted the suspension of the diversity lottery programme. The suspect, linked to both this attack and another murder, entered the US through the lottery system in 2017.

The program, which grants up to 50,000 visas annually to individuals from countries with low immigration rates in the US, has been targeted by Trump before. Following a terrorist attack in New York in 2017, Trump aimed to terminate the scheme. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced the suspension, emphasising the need to prevent further harm related to the programme.

Claudio Neves Valente, the suspect in the Brown University shooting, also allegedly killed Nuno Loureiro, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Valente was found dead from a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound after a multi-state manhunt. Evidence linked him to both the university shooting and the professor’s murder.

Authorities revealed that video footage and public tips led to the identification of Valente’s rented vehicle, connecting him to the crime scenes. Brown University confirmed Valente's previous enrolment but clarified that he had no current affiliation. The university mourns the loss of students Ella Cook and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, victims of the attack.

Experts and officials are assessing the consequences of suspending the programme. Critics have long debated its efficacy and safety, with recent events adding pressure on its future. As investigations continue, authorities remain vigilant, with community safety being a top priority in the aftermath of these tragic events.

Key Takeaways

He said he was going to ditch that green card lottery nonsense years ago, surprised he didn't do it back in 2017.

At least there's some benefit to the country.  The US is up to its neck in diversity. Time to take a breather.  The next administration will probably cancel the Trump Visa and keep the cardholders' cash.

I heard the suspect also slept on bedsheets and ate chicken, so we should outlaw bed linens and poultry...which would make exactly as much sense as suspending the DV program.

And ironically, the suspect is a western European, and the program was originally launched by Ted Kennedy with the intent of helping Irish immigrate to the US 🤷

If you continue blaming inanimate objects for acts of evil committed by criminals and nutters you will continue to get your irrational arguments highlighted. Sorry if this triggers.

Can't say I disagree with the US authorities on halting this scheme.  Seems right they re-assess the scheme to address the obviously correct criticisms from experts.
