Post-Trump 2028 Race Opens As Newsom Surges, Harris Dips In Poll

The 2028 presidential race has quietly — and in some cases loudly — begun, as ambitious figures in both parties work to position themselves for a post-Trump political era. Although the Trump Organisation is already selling “Trump 2028” hats, former President Donald Trump himself recently acknowledged that he will not be the Republican nominee next cycle. That has triggered a wave of early manoeuvring as would-be contenders seek attention through book tours, media profiles, policy speeches and the occasional manufactured feud.

On the Democratic side, California Governor Gavin Newsom has emerged as the party’s most aggressive — and increasingly successful — attack dog. His bold, sometimes controversial, style has angered and energised Democrats in equal measure.

Newsom has picked cultural fights, shifted the tone of progressive messaging and even pushed through a ballot initiative to suspend California’s independent redistricting commission in favour of Democrat-leaning maps. The strategy appears to be paying off: Newsom is now the only Democrat showing clear momentum in multiple national primary polls, moving from single digits early in the year to consistent double-digit support.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris, meanwhile, had a high-profile year promoting her bestselling campaign memoir 107 Days. Big crowds and major media coverage kept her in the national conversation, but her standing in early 2028 polling has softened.

Where Harris once led most primary surveys with roughly 27 percent support, her average has slipped to around 21 percent — and she is now sharing, rather than dominating, frontrunner status.

With three years still to go, the field is far from set. But the jockeying has already begun — and some contenders are clearly finding their stride faster than others.

Key Takeaways

  • Gavin Newsom is the only Democrat showing clear, sustained polling momentum

  • Kamala Harris’ book tour raised her profile, but her poll standing slipped

  • Both parties are already manoeuvring for a crowded, post-Trump 2028 race

Such way early polling is basically meaningless.
