UK Vows to Defend Shamima Begum Citizenship Removal

The UK government has vowed to defend its decision to revoke Shamima Begum's British citizenship, as the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) investigates the case. A government source emphasised that British courts have consistently upheld the decision. Due to national security concerns, the government stripped Begum of her citizenship after she left for the Middle East in 2015 and became linked with the Islamic State.

Begum was just 15 when she left London and married an IS fighter. Her lawyers argue that the decision didn't adequately consider whether she was a victim of grooming and trafficking. The ECHR has asked the UK Home Office to address questions regarding these considerations and any obligations owed to her under European human rights laws.

The UK government maintains that the home secretary will prioritise national security by defending the citizenship revocation. Begum has previously been denied the opportunity to challenge this decision by the UK Supreme Court. The ECHR investigation questions the UK's obligation to consider her victim status under Article 4, which prohibits slavery and forced labour.

Lawyer Gareth Pierce, representing Begum, argues that she was lured away as a teenager and criticises her lack of protection, especially since a friend had similarly vanished. Despite these claims, the British government remains resolute, asserting that Begum should not re-enter the UK. Critics, including shadow home secretary Chris Philp, assert she voluntarily supported extremists.

As the ECHR’s enquiries unfold, the UK government is preparing to defend its stance, while Begum’s legal team continues to challenge the decision. The outcome could have broader implications for similar cases in Europe, reported the BBC.

Key Takeaways

  • The UK government is committed to defending its decision to revoke Shamima Begum's citizenship.

  • The ECHR is enquiring if the UK failed to consider Begum as a potential victim of trafficking.

  • The situation poses significant questions on international human rights obligations.

Okay, my 27-year old daughter still thinks I'm an idiot (she may be right). I think Shamima escaped an oppressive family culture as a horny 15-year old who thought she was running to freedom. Only to find, of course, not only was ISIS even more oppressive. Unlike her parents, they beheaded people, captured women for sex slaves aso. She still doesn't know if her two schoolmates are dead or alive.

At 27, one would think one's views have matured, particularly due to the experiences she's had. Shamima's have not. Neither has my daughter's. Even her own parents say she's dangerous. Surely she'd at least try to raise money to support ISIS in the UK.

If she has Bengali citizenship, send her there, if they'll even take her. She's sure to be soliciting for the cause in Bangladesh. Delusion is a powerful force.

On a very 'Sobering' piece of info if true??

The number of UK Muslims males that went to Syria to fight for ISIS is a greater number than has ever signed up for the UK armed services?? If that is bona-fide that should be a concern.

Penalty for fighting against your own Crown Forces were death, losing citizenship should be grasped with both hands if still attached.

The other piece below is tinged with "Sarcasm"

So you are spreading unverified rumours, hiding behind 'I don't know if true, but if ...'

I like your description of her as a horny 15 year old who thought she was running to freedom. I take issue with the rest of your post. There is no credible evidence that she still holds extremist views. Her father originally criticised her but as a Muslim father would. Her mother and siblings have asked for her return. To suggest she would raise money for ISIS is pure conjecture and given her situation should she return, highly unlikely. On balance I believe a naive 15 year old who has been groomed and radicalised should receive some understanding and given a second chance. Now pile on fellas!

I agree and I support her return. However, she made clear in press interviews in the refugee camp her views toward ISIS have not changed much. And that she would raise money for the Islamic State. Hope Dad comes around.
