Hat Yai district in Songkhla province celebrated the New Year with a grand festival, marking its first major event since recent devastating floods. The "Hat Yai New Year 2026" celebration drew over 5,000 attendees and sparked a surge in local economic activity, generating at least 300 million baht. Organized by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Hat Yai City Municipality, and local partners, the event signified a hopeful rebound for the community.

The festival featured a wide array of entertainment, including performances by national artists, local youth bands, and international DJs. The atmosphere was further enlivened by illuminated landmark buildings, symbolizing Hat Yai's revitalized spirit. Over 120 food stalls, featuring halal options, attracted both Thai and Malaysian visitors, contributing significantly to the local economy.

Hat Yai's mayor Narongporn Na Phatthalung, alongside TAT officials and provincial leaders, attended the festivities, underscoring the city's recovery and its readiness to regain its status as a regional tourism hub. The event provided a much-needed boost after the floods inflicted economic damage estimated at 100 billion baht.

National parks in northern and northeastern Thailand also reported significant tourist inflows during the New Year period. Khao Yai National Park received 21,958 visitors, both Thai and foreign, who enjoyed camping and musical performances in cooler temperatures. Entry fees were waived, and green chiretta herbal gifts were distributed, adding to the festive spirit.

Doi Inthanon National Park in Chiang Mai experienced a rush of over 10,000 tourists witnessing the New Year's first sunrise. The park's temperatures dropped to 3°C, with frost formations visible, while visitors enjoyed the scenic sea-fog views.

Looking ahead, Hat Yai's strong turnout and festive spirit mark a promising recovery trajectory for the region's economy and tourism industry. Continued efforts to attract visitors and promote regional attractions are expected to sustain this positive momentum, reported Bangkok Post.
