Visa exempt extension refused

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

Just been to immigration to extend the 60 day visa exempt .

Cannot be done .

I was told that visa exempts can only be extended once per year .

I entered Thailand last year in May and got a visa exempt extension .

I then entered Thailand last November on visa exempt and today I applied for an extension, but it got refused .

Todays extension was counted as being part of last year , because that is when I entered .

I was also told that land border visa exempts are reset at the start of the year .

Told I should do a visa run instead of getting an extension

Which immigration office?

You could do a border run as advised, or check with an agent if they can facilitate the 30-day extension (if you don't plan to stay longer than that anyway).

So you have stayed in Thailand 5 months since May 2025.

Get a visa that's fits your needs.

A metv or Non O or other options such as DTV

But, according to Immigration, you cannot extend land border entries.

The document that went around stated land entries are not eligible for ANY extension at all. Airport entries can receive 1 30-day extension, and then a 7-day extension if you try again the same year.

In practice, it's quite random whether you will be allowed to receive an extension or not if you entered by land. Most people that enter by land did so by doing a border bounce, hence the no extensions allowed.

The only true way to know what you can get is by going to your immigration office and applying.

Just to expand on @BrandonJT post, according to Immigration VE entries at land borders cannot be extended, but land border entries with a valid visa can be extended by 1 x 30 day extension, then a 7 day extension if you try again the same year.
