Swiss Ski resort disaster in Crans Montana is a brutal reminder

Featured Replies

The recent fire disaster in the yuppy Swiss Ski resort of Crans-Montana leaving 40 young teens burned to death or with the toxic fumes and more then 100 very seriously burnt and in coma comes to a brutal reminder. The fire that broke in a bar owned by a couple from France, was fitted with allegedly cheap and illegal materials to soundproof the premises. The point here is that all bar or club owners in the world and Thailand would need to reconsider their usage of illegal and cheap chinese materials during their furnishings. If many bar clubs are open air, what to be said of the larger establishments that can have materials that burn easily in a tropical climate ? Not to mention the total absence of any checking at the entrance as not to allow minors in the clubs.

Could society hope that this brutal wake up call may arise some concern with authorities and dance club-bar owners in Thailand as to double check the materials used and what steps would be taken in case of a fire outbreak ? Let's not dream but I definately will try to be seated as much as possible someplace close to the nearest exit.

I always locate exits everywhere I go. That doesnt mean I would get to one if the need arises.

I never sit with my back to a door.

@Sigmund 's comment about a yuppy resort...

noun: yuppy

  1. a young person with a well-paid job and a fashionable lifestyle.

    "stereotypical 1980s yuppies obsessed with material objects and financial success"

...owned by a French couple, regarding the tragedy in Crans Montana, Switzerland on New Year's Day.

The reality, is that fire regulations differ and are not always inspected nor enforced wherever in the world. There is nightclub in Pattaya that is on the second floor and, to my knowledge has only two entries/exits. It is always packed with people. On my visits, I'm aware to stay near one of those exits in case somnething should happen. There's another nightclub in Bangkok that I have visited that is on a different "level" that each time I've been there have entered and exited via an elevator/lift. No idea where, and if, there is an emergency stairway.

Many of my Swiss neighbours claim that ever since Switzerland (not part of the EU members), started opening it's local markets to the European Union nationals, the Swiss Made efficiency and quality and mainly their probity has drasticaly dropped.

Think about the source of that information. Why might many of your Swiss neighbours say that? Is it supported both by evidence and a causal relationship?

The mayor, a Swiss national, had no explanation when asked why the club had not had a fire inspection for over 5 years despite an annual inspection being mandatory. Perhaps the corruption lies closer to home but it is more convenient to blame foreigners.

Not that I mean to defend to stigmatize anybody but during those years there was the COVID mess and above all the french couple who operated that lethal bar in Switzerland, did have a very shady background (the husband), was flashing wealth all around, paid in cash all his real estate purchases with no bank loans and also had a well diversified criminal record (the man that is). All this is not my saying, plainly stating what their media is reporting.

So, are you talking about EU Nationals in general or are you talking about the French owners of the bar? You can't have it both ways.
